M Sport Gear Lever

Just collected my car after mot to find the gear knob loose on the lever. There are several turns of thin insulated wire round the lever which the tester assumed to be a ‘bodge’ to keep the knob on. I don’t see that as likely and wonder if the wire is original? Is it original?

Yes, the M knobs light up. Others too, my 2.2 Sport has an illuminated knob
