Hi there.
We bought a z3 on Saturday and the Mrs took it to work today and the engine light has come on and now it's running lumpy. Is there anything common that could cause this.
It is going in for a service on Thursday and was

Where to start... As the Nefyn cat says, plug it into a code reader, I would then give it a good service, first, Plugs, check plug holes for being full of oil, change oil, filters etc. while doing this, look out for anything loose, wires, vacuum pipes, etc, then do a smoke test to check the inlet pipes.

I think we should finish the OP's sentence for him. Here's my first attempt:

It is going in for a service on Thursday and also to fix my car's stereo. The mechanic said he'd have to tune in to the problem.

That's a bit crap. I wonder what the mechanic said about it running "lumpy"?

"Well, it sounds like your car is just trying to communicate in Morse code. Maybe it's saying, 'SOS – Send Oil Soon!'

Please add your (just as bad) versions!

Code Reader is your friend in these situations, EML lit will have set a code pointing to what caused it. get yourself a Creator 310+ or 410+ available on eBay and Amazon circa £50+ that reads and clears codes and views live data. To use on a Z3 you will need a 20pin to 16pin OBD2 cable changer to plug in to the engine bay round Pacman socket to read all modules. Cable also on eBay for little money.
if your car also has a 16pin OBD2 socket inside the car under the steering wheel that will only read Engine and Transmission modules, the under bonnet round socket reads all modules.
