Are these any good? Back when I was young Lucas automotive electronics had a terrible reputation but now I don't know.

Cheers

Funny how things change isn’t it? When I was young Lucas had a good rep. here in the UK. Chinese owned now so who knows?

Yes well am talking about 1960s & 1970s Lucas as found in MG, Jaguar etc. The Lucas electronics in those cars had a terrible reputation and were responsible for lots of jaguar vehicles just stopping. Especially the electronic ignition versions.

If they are chinese then I guess give it a miss. There is just such a big price diff for maf, o2 etc

Electronic Ignition wasn’t a thing until the very late 70s. Still points and condensers, high and low tension ignition systems as I recall. Chrysler cars which came to the place where I worked had cheap nasty solid state ignition fitted in place of Lucas parts. Simca cars were mainly Ducellier or Magnetti Morelli equipped.

Yes my Dad had several XJ12s with lucas opus electronic ignition. This was fitted from 1971 until it was replaced with a unit that did not leave you by the side
of the road waiting for it to cool down.
Once the v12 went lucas efi similiar issues cropped up. Despite many replacement lucas parts this continued to happen.

The family spent many hours by the side of the road across 2 v12 xjs in the early to mid 1970s until my old man gave up on the dodgy build quality and electronics of jaguar and tookthe last car back to the dealer and said "you can have it. I dont want it" and went and bought a 7 series and stayed bmw after that. Hence my z3 i suppose.

Lucas - like Champion spark plugs and Dunlop tyres - were standard fit for BMC group and other British cars, so became complacent - the usual British industrial disease. They did good chrome plate though. Good profits from their automotive activities were used to subsidise their aerospace division.
Night driving on a motorcycle was a real gamble - Joseph Lucas was not known as the 'Prince of Darkness' for nothing . . .

For sensors for your BMW, stick to OE manufacturers. For many BMW's this is Bosch O2 sensors.

If you want to check who the OE maker was, jump onto one of the USA parts suppliers webpages and have a look. Pelican Parts is one. They usually tell you in the parts list.

I've used the Bosch universal 02 sensors once. That was enough. Great sensor. The connection box is a pain to work with and thread trough the car.

Thanks guys. Has anyone used a Pierburg MAF? I was chasing down a problem which could have been maf related and swapped out the Siemens one for this. Thought it would be ok as SAP is pierburg but have had codes for fuel trims at negative max sporadically so I think it over reads

It usually pays to stay with the Siemens/VDO MAF's. Aftermarket MAF's are either really good or really bad. I've seen too many bad ones to buy them now.

Which engine do you have in your Z3?

If you have a scanner that can record a data log file, I can give you a test to run. By looking at the data log file, I can usually tell if your MAF is giving problems. If your scanner does not log data, then it's relatively cheap to set up a smart device with an app and OBD2 adapter to capture the data. Can provide the details if you are interested.

I have m52tu 2.8. I have swapped back the factory maf to see if the codes come back. I have inpa and torque app. Think torque can log but not inpa. Cheers

OK, to check just the MAF, log RPM, MAF (g/s) and all 4 fuel trims while doing the Rev-Rise test below. Send me the CSV file (trade emails addresses via private message) and I'll run it through my spread sheet.

If you want me to have a full look at your engines running, then there are around 20 PID's to log depending on your engine. There are 3 standard test to log. I run some calculations though the data and tell you what I see. The PID's and the tests can be found in this thread and PDF. https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/obd-fusion.1240733/#post-18380161

The 3 standard logs (usually done in the order listed) are:
  • Cold start. No AC or major electrical loads. Just start the car and let it idle until the Temp gauge gets to 1/4.
  • Highway cruise. 2 to 3 minutes of highway cruise at around 100kmph (60mph). Using cruise control is best. Don't want a stop start drive log. Must be steady cruise.
  • Hot Idle, No AC or major electrical loads. Just let it idle for 2 to 3 minutes.

Rev Rise Test
Run your normal OBD Fusion log. Hot engine and Cat’s, stationary car. The test is best done just after a drive. Slowly raise the rev's of the engine (gradual increase) up from idle to around 3,000 rpm. I mean slowly. It should take you 3-4 minutes to do this test.

It takes some skill to do this test due to the lightly loaded engine. A little throttle change results in a large rev change. Don’t run up and down the rev range getting used to the control. If you stuff up the first part of the test getting used to controlling the small rev changes, then redo the test.

Ok thanks. I will need to install odb fusion and get it working with my WiFi odb adapter. I think I tried once before and failed hence torque. I won't be able to play with this until next weekend. Appreciate your help.
