Hi all.
Please can someone point me in the right direction. I have a 2000 Z3 1.8 and I have just been told the side windows are faulty. Is it true when you open the door the glass should drop about 15mm and the reverse when closed
Mine doesn't

No they are still old school BMW didn't fit that until later models 1 series, 6 series there are enough leaks in the cabin not to need it;);)

I don't know about the Z3 but my 2000 M3 convertible had windows that dropped when you open the doors and go back up when you close the door. My Z4 does the same and to be honest I personally find it a pain in the arse? My sons M235i also does it but I always feel as though its going to catch on the seal and break the glass. Also if you press the unlock button on the remote twice........ie to remote open the boot, when you then open the door the window goes almost down to the bottom?

The windows on the Z3M Coupe lower as you describe, never noticed if the same is the case with the any of the Z3 Roadsters. I take it is to do with the fact the door glass is frameless and the lowering action reduces the chance of the glass being damaged on opening/closing of the doors .

Hi Dave, welcome from me near Lincoln. Your windows are fine and should not drop like that.

Tony.

I was told by a BMW dealer it's to reduce the pressure inside the cabin to avoid damage with frameless windows.

My 3 GT does it but it just feels like something else to go wrong. I'm not even that bothered about having frameless windows.

But no, definitely not found on Z3 roadsters. Presumably the cloth roof leaks enough air anyway.

Makes more sense on a Z3 coupe with a hard lid.

Not sure where that leaves roadsters with a hard top.

Shirl's Eos does this too, a bit annoying at times but for a reason I guess.

Thanks all.
In that case how close to the hood should the glass be when fully up. I will try and get a photo of the gap on mine.

It may be that the windows need a little adjustment but I would also get some silicon spray and give the rubbers a liberal coating to help the glass seal better. Also spray some down the rubber window channels in the doors and they will move much more easily too.
