You can add or remove private plates online instantly, no need to send anything away.

Unless it's in the process of the vehicle ownership being transferred, then you need to wait for the logbook to be returned to you and have a current retention certificate. Once you have the new log book for the car just purchased then you can do it instantly. It's a longer process if you need to take a private reg off, wait for the log book to come back with the original registration and then assign a new one as it can't be done without the logbook. It's a lot quicker than the old way of going to the local office though.

As I will be then owning both cars, should be straight swap right ? and doable on line ?
 
Yes you can do it online, can't remember exactly how when doing a transfer but I think it still needs to come off the car first and then assigned to the other one. It should be a lot quicker if you already own both vehicles as you don't have to mess about putting it on retention and waiting for the documents to come back for the new vehicle. I'm sure when I transferred mine between zeds it was off the old and onto the new the same day.
