Hi.. you need to have the cup holder fitted into the center console. The armrest then has the correct height to be useful as an armrest... The armrest then is hinged on the back end of the cupholder. It is supplied complete with screws and grommets and fitting instructions for fixing to the cupholder. Available in various real leather colours to match your interior.

I've just posted a Red/Black version I sent off to the UK yesterday. The cupholders are available from BMW or on eBay... eBay seem to go for around $80.
Must add, it's one of the mods for the Z3 which makes a huge difference to driving and seating comfort. As you will know, if your left hand isn't on the wheel, it's on the gear shift, there's just nowhere to rest your elbow....This is an absolute change of feel..also, when it's fitted, it acts as a lid for the rectangular storage area below it...The quality is excellent, and it's a 10min fitting job.
I had a look at other versions available, and they were going for around £160.00 and weren't as well made or shaped.. These have 50mm foam compressed to 25mm in them, so the rest is firm but not hard. The leather is fairly thick at around 2mm+ so it's a fair tough finish. Finally the colours are dyed in, not painted, which means it'll endure over time.
