On the advice of MrScalex I have been speaking to Jim Mann concerning getting new keys made for my Z3.

I had the older tombstone looking key but the problem was I only had the one.

He supplied a new flip out key that looks and feels much better. The remote locking was very easy to program.
If anyone needs any key work done he can be contacted at telecommann@hotmail.com

I just started using it and the only downside appears to be the security chip is a little slow to respond. It is located a little farther away from the ignition in the key so it seams the EWS is slower to recognize it. If I put the key in and leave it a second before starting it works fine. Will see how it goes over the next week. The other option is to disable the EWS all together. Not a bad idea since it went mental on me once.

Looked at this last year but thought it required some part of the electric module off the car to be sent away to get the new key paired up, so didn’t go ahead with the idea. Also the fella who was doing it I believe seemed to have an issue with the org forum.

The door locks are easy to program by putting the key in and out and pushing the buttons. Details are online.

I only have one transponder chip for the EWS at the moment and transferred that over to the new key. Already have a programmer and just waiting for some cheap transponders to come in before I program the EWS and put one back in my old key.

Love to hear how you get on with this, are you keeping the coding machine or selling it after you have finished with your car?

Will be keeping up with this thread Delk as Lynne's zed only has 1 key and I would be interested in adding another one so hope you sort something other than paying through the nose for BMW to do it

I will be keeping the programmer. Dont mind using it for others but I like to keep a hold of tools.

The key and feel are great. Just feels nicer then the old tombstone shaped one. Only issue is the slow response of the security chip. I think I can move the antenna ring farther out so it is closer to the key and I will look at that later. The other option as Jim advised is to put the chip inside the ignition instead of the key. This disables the security function so you only have the key and any of your keys will work without programming. Its an idea but I want to see if I can get it working correctly first.

For now I just have to put the key in and wait a second before starting so it is reads the chip correctly. If I do it quickly the starter simply doesn't engage and I have to do its again.

I'd be interested in this, as only have 1 key for my black Z3 (facelift) and need a spare key. My key has the built in buttons.

Speak to Jim. He did everything off a photo of my key and programming the buttons was very easy.

Jim's a good man but remember he will only supply a dumb key. Though as an emergency get into/out of car it will be fine.

You will need a donor PCB for remote actions.

And most importantly a programmer and new transponder chip to make the key recognisable to the EWS to start the car. That involves removing the EWS from the car and connecting it to the programmer. Very doable but not for the faint-hearted who become concerned about breaking electronics!

The key he provided me as test and came with a new pcb. To program it you just put it in turn it to the first position then take it back out. Hold down the lock key and press the unlock three times (or visa versa). The key is then synchronized with the door locks and they open and close. It was easy as that and took less then 20 seconds. Far more time was spend on google and youtube to see how it was done.

The EWS chip I transferred over from my other key. Still waiting for new chips that I can program with the car and thats a bit more tricky. I have the coder but never used it before but always willing to give it a go.

The problem is that people get confused between syncing the remote to operate the locks/alarm and programming a new transponder.

What you’ve done there is to sync the remote. Programming is the transponder part and is very different.

So what you’ve done there is a reshell effectively. Transferring the current transponder.

Making a new key which is what most people ask about is a different thing.
