Not quite accurate, there was never an 01 plate, it was Y and my car has always been taxed under the earlier system.

Yeah - 51 was the first new style plate.

I've always thought car tax should be based on the vehicles weight, as heavier vehicles do more damage to roads and produce more particulate polution.

Since the majority of them are bought through company schemes theres the tax incentive, cheaper to fuel, and if they are really good folks would buy them anyway.
Plus the owners can feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing they have made Britains roads great again, and the rest of us should be forever grateful

Am I missing something? Is this any different than what already happens with annual VED rises, and we always seem to get a clickbait 'story' in the papers claiming the government is screwing us even more by backdating/extending the affected registrations.

As far as I can tell, there's be no change to the registration dates affected (i.e. always been 01-Mar-2001 to 31-Mar-2017, not forgetting those sneaky Z4Ms that were registered before 23 March 2006 who got the lower rate).

My Z4MC is a late 2006 model and was £735 in 2024...£695 in 2023...and £440 when I bought it in late 2008.

That is exactly the way it has been done over here in the Netherlands for many years now.

Road tax for a Z3 :- Euro 179 for three months.

Road tax for a Volvo XC90 :- Euro 521 for three months.
