James Bond drove a 2.8 or even a 3.0 Z3?

I realise that the brief appearance of a Z3 (before it was available to the public) was very clever product placement. Overall with nearly 300,000 Z3s produced it was a massive sales success for BMW who originally had targeted 100,000 units.

In terms of the perception of the car I do wonder whether history would have treated it differently if James bond had driven a 6 cylinder ca launched with the six cylinder 2.8 engine or the M54 3.0 if it had been available.

It seems the motoring press had already made their minds up on the perception of the cars fitted with the 1.8 or 1.9 four cylinder cars and when the six cylinder engines came later they didnt get much press coverage?

Why was the z3 launched in 4 cylinder guise? Was it to compete headlong with the MX5 and the higher performance 6 cylinder cars were only an afterthought??

Sadly no match for the MX5 which was a delight to drive, better handling, sweet gear change, but in the UK it rusted while you watched. The Z3's best feature is it's retro style body, it is one of the prettiest 2 seaters ever produced.

The designer of the Z3, Joji Nagashima who also designed the E39 is considered as one of the most "liquid" designers of the 20th century.
He also is the holder of more than 20 patens that he has applied and approved for, so nobody can repliacate his forms unless he has permission.
Kinda like the Porsche 911 (see photos below).

He also designed the E90 making his trio (Z3, E39, E90) the most successfull models for BMW in the 20th Century.

It’s hard to believe that he designed the E90. It’s easily my least favourite 3 series as a saloon, but I have always loved the E92 coupe. The coupe always seemed a bit less Bangle.

His original design was not approved by the board.
So they made many changes. Thats where he said he had enough and stopped designing.
