I realise that the brief appearance of a Z3 (before it was available to the public) was very clever product placement. Overall with nearly 300,000 Z3s produced it was a massive sales success for BMW who originally had targeted 100,000 units.
In terms of the perception of the car I do wonder whether history would have treated it differently if James bond had driven a 6 cylinder ca launched with the six cylinder 2.8 engine or the M54 3.0 if it had been available.
It seems the motoring press had already made their minds up on the perception of the cars fitted with the 1.8 or 1.9 four cylinder cars and when the six cylinder engines came later they didnt get much press coverage?
Why was the z3 launched in 4 cylinder guise? Was it to compete headlong with the MX5 and the higher performance 6 cylinder cars were only an afterthought??
