I had a big soft spot for a 80's and 90's Jags. Some years ago we had a 1993 4.2 Supercharged XJR. It was Jues favourite car we've ever owned.

The only thing the cocked up with on the X-type was fitting the Transit Diesel engine and a crap dual mass.
Noisiest, rattliest things ever. Not to bad ar speed with windows closed.

Briefly prior to retiring I had a 2.2. 55 plate X type can not recall model, but it was the top of the sport range ,being diesel it was only 2 wd drive.
I actually found the engine & gearbox ( along with the front seats)to be the only decent bits in the car. The GPS system would regularly put me miles from my location, the radio had a complete mind of its own,the zenons bounced up and down erratically ( was told by dealer they all did that ) and a number of other annoying trouble. Fortunately after a few month I gave up work suddenly (doctors orders) and car departed. The only reason I had it was --- I did not like the 5 ser at that time, having had the 330d ,and 525d (e39 best car ever)

I loved my X type, it felt special, nothing wrong with the Donor car the Mondeo was a good car, put good quality leather and wood and the sleek looks of the Jag happy memories.

But was it a diesel? That's the only real issue I had with the X-type.

Yep and the 5 speed, did really need 6 gears, but it was a bucket list sort of thing. As a kid always loved Jags never thought i would own one, similar to when i got my first BMW then the Z3 my first convertible. Heard all the arguments not a proper Jag etc but to me it felt great.
Have driven the technically far superior XF quite a lot, it just doesn't feel special in any way.
But anyway i'm all grown up now and only drive BMW's

One thing in common with the Z4. Cr@p headlights!
OK, it was a diesel, but a diesel from a transit van. Never had a single problem with the one we had in 3 years.
Basically a Ford, and you get few poor handling Fords.
Oh, and back to headlights. Changing the bulbs which went frequently, was a complete mare. Skinned knuckles every time.

As the Mondeo was best in class, by a distance, and was further improved in the guise of the X-Type I'd say that makes it a pretty good car :) It also has a race derived diesel engine from the Transit, never seen one go less than 150 MPH so must be nails :D

I had 2 X Types, a 2.0 and a 2.2 both diesels. I really liked them and would probably have had a third had they not stopped making them. As it was though, I moved over to 3 series E90 & F30 which were much better drivers cars but not as practical as the X.

Small point, but there were little levers behind the headlights for the other side of the tunnel. So much easier than those pesky stickers.

Used to be a common thing on headlights and you would have thought with modern technology it would be a simple thing to do these days Steve.

Handbook says it is , in the X1 just don't use the "Automatic driving lights control" switch so it disconnects the variable light distribution .and of course the e39 had an adjuster on top and of each headlight unit.

When i said common i meant run of the mill cars, which probably would never go over to the continent anyway.
