My 99 Z3 is having issues starting, it'll turn but won't start. It's possible the battery needs replaced? Whoever owned it before me certainly took ample care of it (it has the original toolkit in the back!) but as I was learning how to shift it last night, it stalled and then refused to start.

Voltage tells all, as an alternative try turning the lights on and then cranking it, if the lights dim the battery is weak and or needs servicing or replacement. I use a cigarette lighter voltmeter that is always in the socket and displaying vehicle voltage.

When you turn the key does ot sound like it's turning over quickish? The fact it stalled and then wouldn't start kinda sounds like fuel or ignition.

sounds like you have just bought the car, is there old fuel in it? have you put new fuel in? and as the others have said, battery will show up as slow turning the car over, dimming of the lights etc etc
if it stalls and wont start because of slow turning over then battery, if not you need to check air and fuel...
what year car and what engine?

Mine does the same; every once in a while - and usually after a long drive where I park for five or ten minutes - it cranks but won't start. I have to depress the accelerator then it catches. Nothing on the code reader at all, seems like fuel evaporation?

We use to call that vapor lock but the Z has fuel injection so theoretically it should not be possible. I would check to make sure I have adequate fuel pressure as you crank and check codes of course.
