Is this normal?

I pulled out the M44 from my Z3 and discovered this crude welding job on the shifter linkage. I can not think of a scenario where this part could snap or break to require welding like this. Any ideas???

Has it been shortened to aid shift as said more modified than broken i would say.....

Has it been shortened to aid shift as said more modified than broken i would say.....
Doubtful shortening the main shaft would put the stick out of alignment unless there was also a modification at the stick end which is where short shift modifications are usally done
