So is the best way to have clean lenses at the rear to open them up and remove the amber plastic and replace the bulb with a orange lamp?Some do but the pre and post face lift cars have different style rear lights that aren't interchangeable and as you have said yours is an R reg the assumption is its a pre-face lift?

Claire not really, best way for the rears is to buy a set of clear or smoked light units. As for the fronts you can split them and remove the orange lens as @Sean Donnelly has done (sure he will give info) or get a set of lights that have clear indicator lens or buy a set of Angel Eye front lights that are already orange lens free, you can also get clear side indicator units if you want to totally de-tango your zed.Oh I see, thank u very much.
