Hi, the car in question is a 2001 Z3 3.0i..
Today going up a steady incline (50mph+) In 5th the car didn't have power, also the exhaust sounded noisy.
Gave it a good thrash but it seems to have lost its sparkle.
All connections seem ok. No abnormal engine noises, starts on the button. No EGM lights on.
Can anyone recommend a decent fault code reader and any other suggestions.
Did over 400 miles last weekend with out fault.

i know on my 1.9 theres no management light on the dash but if you plug in a obd reader codes will flag up... i had a faulty cam sensor causing me loss of power and stalling. yours maye that..... best get a obd reader and try some of the free software i think it was proscan i used.... you can get a bluetooth obd reader that will connect up to your phone and install obd apps on your device... or buy a cheap generic code reader it will save you money in the long run, would cost you the price of a code reader to take it somewhere to get the codes read.. i sure theres someone on here with a 3.0l that can help pretty soon...

heres a few code readers i dont know how good they are as i use a elm327 code reader and an adaptor plug, and software on my laptop...

Need a code reader to see if it's cam/crank sensors.

In the meantime you can check if anything is blocking the air intake/filter.

I've heard of catalytic converters breaking up which block exhaust and make it sluggish and I guess make a noisy exhaust - not very common though I believe

There is also a large diameter short hose on the rear left of the engine as you look from the front that tends to split. Will see if i can find the part number and a diagram

Do a code reading before you start throwing parts at the car.

Lack of power and exhaust note change points toward the exhaust cam not changing position under VANOS.

Things to consider (in order of likelihood) are:
- Cam sensors- Will come up on the code read and not bring up an engine check light
- VANOS solenoids, sometimes get clogged up and stop working, can be cleaned
- VANOS seals

Hope this helps
