There should be a list of fuses, their size (amperage) and location on the underside of the fuse box lid.

Do you have a copy of the wiring diagrams for your Z3?

They can be found in the "Resources" section of this forum. Look at the blue ribbon at the top of your screen to find the "Resources" section. Top of page 1, you'll find the wiring diagrams for the UK Z3's. Check your build date with the dates on the lower right corner of the first page of the diagrams. On page 2, you'll find the USA version diagrams. These cover 98% of the UK Z3's.

So, you're not too familiar with your Z3 or fixing it? We all have to start somewhere, just take it one step at a time.

Yes there are several fuses boxes:
  • Engine bay, left hand side near the fire wall. Easy clip off cover. All the general fuses are there.
  • Engine bay, right hand side near the brake booster (RHD car). Inside the screwed down black plastic cover that contains the engine computer (DME). The 5 engine management fuses. They are under the screwed down cover because you'll hardly ever have to look at them.
  • Inside the car, under the left side glove box cover, on the side of the wall. Main power fuses. These are bolted into place. They are so well hidden because you'll never need to replace them. If you do, then it's likely because you have a wiring fault and have put a nail into a engine bay fuse holder to melt out the problem and the power fuse is last line of defense before the car bursts into flames.

My Dakar also has done this a couple of times 2 or 3 years ago as said usually ignition off a couple of minutes then on all ok stopped doing it never got to bottom of

What I would say is not likely to be a single fuse causing the issue as a number of the dash components are powered as part of the circuitry for the particular item it is relevant to.
Stephen.

If all the gauges are not working, except the speedo, then it's a known and common problem. With several different root causes. The fault often goes away when the car has warmed up after a few minutes and the car is restarted.

I have a cluster coming back Tuesday from repair exhibiting this. I programmed a new coding plug and it wasn't that. So I left the difficult job of tracking down dry solder joints or blown capacitors etc to them.

If none of the gauges are working not the same problem as I'm describing and solutions may lay elsewhere.

Same here - common fault that got worse over time but would always go away once it was warmed up and turned on and off again. You might find you have a speedo over-read too of about 5-10 mph. In the end I took the plunge and sent it off to the experts to fix. It took them a while and two gos at it so it can't have been a simple fix. But now it is back and full working order - well worth it.

Yes, my no gauges except speed problem also had the over read (I think +20%). Back now from repair and working great.
