Instrument cluster code EEP_1

I have this code EEP_1 where the mileage should be. Also petrol gauge, temperature gauge and rev counter are not working. I`ve searched the internet and it seems like the best option is to replace the cluster with one that is working. I`ve read t-tony`s how to guide on removing the cluster and it doesn`t seem too daunting.
My car is a 2000 3.0 auto
A few questions:
1. I`ve used real oem and it appears the same cluster is found on all models from 01/1998 to 06/2002. Can anyone confirm this before I start looking.
2. Will it be a straight swap without having to do anything? I know it`ll show the wrong mileage and the tamper dot will be present but I can live with that.
3. Is it possible to have the correct mileage put in.
4. Any advice, thoughts or issues I haven`t thought of would be much appreciated.

Have a good search on the forum for past threads on replacement of the cluster. There is a small plug at the rear of the cluster which carries info for your car so that has to be switched over to the replacement cluster.

3. Yes, you need the PaSoft software on a laptop and a cable. For obvious reasons I can not share online neither of the above info.

I am not too bothered about the mileage being wrong. Can you tell me if I fitted a second hand hand instrument cluster if it would work without doing anything to it?

I had an issue back when I had an e36 and although I swapped the instrument cluster still had no results.
I remember that it was not the instrument cluster fault but the small circuit board behind.
I do not know how it called in English, but it is a small cirquit inside a white plug with many pins.
maybe you have to try this first. I am sure that the resident breakers can help you more in this issue.
to directly give an answer, yes, any speedo from a six cylinder engine that is the same type as yours (M54 I guess) can fit.
but first I would try 1- recoding, 2-the plug and whatever this is called and 3-a full swap.
hope I helped somehow.

Thanks for your input. I hate electrical problems
