I bought a set of facelift sports seats from Steve @Low Rider a couple of months ago and intended to have them fitted by now, but weekend home jobs, bad weather and a touch of the "I can't be arsed" delayed the job until now.

Steve had had them in storage for a while and told me they needed a good clean, but they weren't too bad.

I did an initial clean and a couple of easy repairs with the help of a leather refurbishing kit from "Scratch Doctor" and decided I was going to attempt to create a two tone look that's favoured by many of you fellow Zedders.

I decided mine was going to be black and beige so had a go and this is how they turned out.

The beige is a little light compared to the rest of the interior but it'll do for the moment.

The recolouring is pretty easy but in my haste to get it done I found that I didn't pay enough attention to the initial cleaning process. When I was putting the beige colour on the seat I found the fluid was "splitting" which meant that I hadn't removed all the grease deposits that had built up over the years, but I'd started so I thought I'd finish it.

Now the techy bit .......

On the underside of facelift seats you'll find one big yellow plug

20160612_090518_resized (1).jpg

and under the seat of a pre-facelift car you'll find a different type of plug, and to make it sort of complicated, there's actually three plugs

20160612_095922_resized (1).jpg

From here you have some choices, you can either cut the plugs off and join the wires if you can sort this type of thing yourself, or you can do what I did and buy a couple of BMW purpose made wiring looms. I bought these from Soper's @Soper Parts Lincoln . They aren't cheap at £52 each, but it means the job is "plug and go". BMW part number is 61106916218.

The yellow bit fits into the yellow bit like this

20160612_090951_resized (1).jpg

and the other ends fit together like this

20160612_100054_resized.jpg

Easy peasy.

So, then you just fit the new seats into your Zed, connect the plugs as already described and Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your auntie and job's a guddun. Job done.

Just got the one in then it started to rain so I thought I'd come in the house for a cuppa and to start putting this on the forum.

When it knocks off I'll go out and fit the other one and I'll take a top down pic of my updated Zed.

Excellent job Garry, they look really smart. As you said it's becoming a fashion to two tone the seats and I like what @MAURICE THE MARTIAN has done with his Z4 so maybe something for the future, when I don't need the car every day, or if I come accross some reasonably priced seats. Maybe even a set of sport seats.

Tony.

Tony the Z4 sport seats are a ridicules price at the moment. I was hoping to get some for mine so i could take mine out and do a better job of the existing seats but can not justify paying around £800 for them. Not when i can get a Scorpion Exhaust instead

I agree mate, I can't see me doing anything with them for a few years at least as I need to use it every day. As you say £800 or so could be better spent!

Excellent job Gary and don't they look so much better being two tone.
Also for taking the time to do a write up.
I'm sure our other members will appreciate it.
I take my hat off to anyone who gives this a go. I look forward to seeing them soon mate.

Looks great, and a good write up too! I've quoted the part number for the wiring loom lots of times, but thats the first time I've actually seen a picture of one

I will be doing a swap both directions, so I will retain the pre-facelift M seats with heaters in the facelifted 2002, my primary goal, then secondarily, put the newer standard non-heated seats into the 1998 so I can sell it.
This part number will help me fit the newer seats into the older car for sale. Do you have a BMW part number for the opposite adapter harness, older seats into newer car?
For extra credit on this test, my passenger seat sensor for the airbags is bad on the pre-facelift M seats that I want to put into the new car. I have information for a bypass module for it, but will that trigger a fault code in the new car? Will using the bypass module prevent all of the connections from being plugged into the newer car's harness and therefore trigger a code? Should I bite the bullet and replace the airbag seat sensor instead?
(I realize small people or kids cannot ride in it without risk of injury from the airbags in an accident.)

wow, this leather coloring thing seems to give very good results...even light colours on black! Very good job, I am more and more tempted to give it a go myself!
