I was wondering if you could advise or give some appropriate links for the correct INPA cable and 20 pin socket adapter for a 1999 Z3. Some plugs mention they have limited ADS capabilities for the E36 and I'm unsure what to buy. I know my model is fitted with the EWS III D if this makes a difference. I need to read read the modules to understand the errors as one of the keys only brings on the ignition and the other Key brings on the ignition and cranks the engine, however, does not start. Any advice would be grateful.

Read this thread about scanning equipment for Z3's: https://zroadster.org/threads/how-to-scan-early-model-z3s-pre-build-date-03-98.39937/

If you update your profile with the year and engine size of your Z3, that will make it easier for people when you ask technical questions. There re so many models of Z3 and some advice is model specific.

For your keys problem. The EWS does 2 things:
  • Recognised the key and enables the starter. This is via the aerial ring around the ignition switch and the security chip in the key.
  • If it recognises the key, it also sends a code to the engine computer (DME) to tell it to deactivate the "drive away protection" With this protection active and a recognised key, the car will crank, but not start.
The easy way to tell is the drive away protection is active or not is to take the black plastic cover off the DME box. This is under the bonnet/hood. In the box is a little black fuse cube.
  1. If the protection is active, With the key in position 2, there will be no 12V DC to earth on either side of any of the fuses.
  2. If the protection is deactivated, with the key in position 2, there will be 12V DC to earth on one side of all of the fuses.
