inner tie rod

i am the process of replacing my inner tie rod and haven't got the locking clamp is it essential or should I get on to bmw and order some.

There should be one on your old tie rod Dave. Sometimes they get so corroded to the lock nut it seems it's all one piece but lay it on a vice and give it a few smack with a hammer and it will come apart.

Hi Tony, thanks for the quick response there was but I destroyed it doh
call to sopers in the morning me thinks.
I am looking forward to driving it once I have finished the passenger side, should notice a difference with two new wishbone tie rods track rods, lollipops anti roll bar links finished off with two new koni shocks at the back !

Ah, ok, well in that case yes you definitely do need them. What they do is lock the adjuster thread by pinching the two splits in the tie rod onto the male thread of the outer track rod end by being tapered on the inside. As you tighten the lock nut it forces the taper to close.
