hi been browsing the web and the likes of Ebay for a while now can seem to pin down a decent kit for my 3.0 apart from a k & n cone type. Any some others just listing 2.8 and 3.2. Im after realy a closed filter or one in a housing to prevent heat soak. Any pointers in the right direction would be great, or anything on the 2nd hand market

Finding generic cone filters is fairly easy as long as you get the correct diameter on the pipes. As you say though, finding one with a decent heat shield is more tricky and tends to push them in the the £2-300 area. You might want to consider making your own heatshield if you have some basic skills. Make a template with card board and tape, and then use that to make it out of something more sturdy and reflective.

I'm building one right now but without the heatshield as I think it's not that important.

In testing I drove last night for an hour really giving it some (whole car was boiling) think full on redline driving

The stainless inlet I've built wasnt even hot to the touch.

When moving I don't think it's an issue tbh

Plus space is mega restricted in the z3 and you need as much filter as you can get which the heatshield would take up

The final thing is that none of these kits really add power, they just sound awesome. (I shall be demonstrating this on sunday)

I went the Simota route as said new they are not cheap.
I brought a kit listed on ebay for and E46 330 ci and E36 ///M3 .
Wrong kit but my thinking was that it would obviously deliver the air and at worse i would have to mod the carbon surround to get it to seat right.
I had to trim it in the end but only on the underside to allow it to sit over the inner wing better but it was well worth the effort and although on the higher price side like most things it is a quality but of kit.
Made my own shield to start with the filter was still warm though but never had any issues with it giving lack of power because of it.

I think the question is, does the 2.8 stuff fit the 3.0 with minor tweaking? As i can find plenty of that

It difference was that the 2.8 has a smaller maf than a 330/ M3 so i had to reduce the size of the out let from if i remember 90mm to 80mm so in your case the 2.8 item may reduce air flow as you would have to up its size rather than in my case lower it

Yeah so your maf is 90mm so 10mm bigger than the 2.8

isnt tricky to make one but its just time consuming measuring up to get a big enough filter in theer to cope with the CFM needed

My kit wouldn't fit right now but its good info for the future. i might make one up!
