I canvased the Oracle (the Mrs) who informs me that Cottage Pie was originally made out of lamb who were looked after by Shepherds, hence the name. Followed by "beep beep beep, I'm trying to have a bath".

Cottage refers to the rural worker, as was in 1791, when potatoes were first introduced as a food supplement for the lower classes. It was made from the leftovers of any roast meat.

Shepherds pie is just a variation on a theme, but they are Cottage pies... Meat filling with a potatoes crust...

Shepherds pie is from lamb
Cottage pie is from beef
Spotted Dick is from ?????
