Misty has intermittent imoberliser issues can open doors with the key fob but then can not start the car, reset key and she will start stop car and same issue again but some times she will start when I try the ignition a few times, also if I turn key to start car and hold there for may be 10 seconds she will fire up. Poor girl has been problematic all year so has not been on the road as much as I would like just lots of normal old car issues, will getting a replacement key solve the issue if so where do you recommend?

Lets break this down a bit.

Car will not start:
  • Does the car crank but will not fire up?
  • Does the car refuse to crank?
  • If the car refuses to crank, do you hear a click when you switch to the start position?
EWS does these things:
  1. Reads the key chip to make sure the key is known to the EWS.
  2. Enables crank. This is done by a relay in the EWS if the key is known to the EWS. Sometimes the relay fails. This causes a no crank, no click condition.
  3. Talks to the DME to disable "Drive away protection". This is done if the key is known to the EWS. Sometimes the "Link" they talk through gets out of alignment. This causes a crank, no start condition.
Things to do and report back:
  • Find the small fuse box in the DME box under the bonnet/hood. With the key in position2, check that you have 12V DC to earth on one side of all of the fuses. If there is voltage, then items 1 and 3 above are confirmed to be working.
  • Check all cable terminations going to the starter motor are tight. These are the large ones. Start at the battery and makes sure the terminations are clean and tight. Check the nut on the + (positive) jump start post under the bonnet/hood. Check the starter motor terminations.

This is the only key

Car is dead as in no crank no click dash all lights up.

Had new starter motor fitted as this was one of her issues so all cables are good and tight.

Followed procedure to ensure key and car are talking by using notes on here

Key fob will unlock lock car

Have checked all fuses they look to be all ok but will put meter across to check again

Car will eventually start sometimes by resetting or by holding ignition on for ages

Thank you for pointers
