Vicious German Sheppard in the neighborhood.

On the next block, there is a German Sheppard that is kept in a cage. Just go by the house, driving or walking and the dog lets you know he's there. I often wondered if I'd be able to protect myself if the dog ever got loose and would come after me. I used to feel sorry for the dog as it was always kept in a large covered pen with a dog house in the pen. The dog always seemed healthy and cared for but was always in the pen. He would be let out in the larger yard when the pen was cleaned which it often was.
One day, while walking by with the dog barking at me, I noticed the owner in the yard and introduced myself. She had another dog with her. It was a giant Schnauzer that she kept in the house with her. I remarked that the Sheppard look like he could kill someone. She asked me if I wanted to meet him. I figured she'd let me in the yard and I could walk up to the pen. She let me in the yard and closed the gate and we walked over to the pen. She got there first and before I knew it she had opened the pen and was letting the dog out. I looked back at the gate and figured I'd never be able to make it out before the dog was on top of me so I just stood my ground and hoped for the best. Here comes the fight and it was running at me. He stopped short, took a good whiff and began to run happily around the yard. Wow, what a relief!!! She told me that it was her son's dog, but her son had gone into the Marines and she had to take of the dog. She said she had tried to walk the dog but it was too strong for her to handle. I asked her if it would be alright if I walked it occasionally and she was happy to agree. I went back to my house and got a leash and came back. The dog didn't bark at me this time and I put him on the leash and took him out for a walk. At least that was my intention. In reality, he took me for a walk. I weigh about 230 pounds and it took everything I had for the dog not to run away with me. I've been walking him now for about 2 years about twice a week. When I go into the yard, you would think the dog had springs on his legs the way he bounces around his pen as I approach. He's pulled me down twice and I've tripped over him twice. This is always by accident as I might want to go in one direction and he sees something in another direction and takes off. If he steps in front of me as I begin to walk, I'll fall over him as you can't just push him out of the way. I haven't fallen lately as he's now under better control and I'm careful before I step. And he's always happy for the walk and doesn't hesitate to show me.............

Well done Frankie. I find most dogs are fine, it's the owners that need putting down.

I've had that same experience several times in the past Frankie when helping on my brother's milk round. A black Labrador was the one I thought was going to eat me alive but it was a great big softy out of it's pen too.

Tony.

Way to be neighbourly Frankie! Looks like a lovely dog! Much like my son's Shepard. When she's on her chain she raises Cain if someone pulls in his driveway but truth is she just wants to lick you to death she's so loveable!! JIM

Dogs usually need a pack-leader. It looks like you have been elected to that role.
I bet its doing you both good. Well done for giving the dog back some of its freedom.

Nice job, some poor old pooches get a bad name cause of their breed/size/looks ETC. Looks like you have a friend for life there

Well done, great to see you getting him out, nothing worse then seeing a dog in a pen.

Well done Frankie, lovely dog. When I was about 7 or 8 years old my father had a big long haired German Shepherd, I used to love taking her for long walks in the woods (on my own). :)

Nice story, there's no such thing as a vicious dogs, and for those that play it a bit difficult, there's usually some abusive former owner behind.
Dogs are a handful of love covered in fluff.

Nice one Frankie, looks like you've both bonded and now you can enjoy an unconditional love you can only get from a dog.
