I stole this picture from Dido d. Hope he doesn't mind. But it really helps me describe my issue.

See that blue painted panel in Dino's picture above. What happens to any water that gets onto that panel. Is there a water channel/Drain? or does water just run down off that panel into the cabin?

The reason I ask is that I've always had a little leak in my boot but today I decided to trace where it's coming from.

Here's picture inside my boot. I pore water carefully into the channel. Top right blue arrows.

water.jpg

and drops appear inside at this joint. (Yellow-Arrow)

Water collects in the corner (Red arrow)

I've now sealed that seam front to rear with proper chassis sealant. Water doesn't come in any more. But where is it going?

That corrugated panel that runs the width of my boot. Can I assume that that's the underside of that blue panel shown in Dino's picture? (or is it double skinned)

If I had water coming through yellow-arrow then somehow it got on top of the big panel inside the cabin?

So. Where does it go?

Thanks

It should go into the drains at either side of the cabin and drain out through the sill to floor joint. Look on YouTube and search BMW Z3 roof drain and you will find a video posted by Frankie (he goes by muppet 18 years on YT) on here.

The water runs off the panel and into the boot and/or cabin through various little gaps.

That’s why I did the fix ‘properly’ in the end - anything else I tried just sent water somewhere else.

it’s not the worst job ever just time consuming the first time.

Decided to do mine. You're right. Once water gets on top of that panel there's a hundred routes into the boot.

While I've got the carpet out i'm doing the rear shocks too.
