I've got the bmcables diagnostics kit on my laptop but I can't get it to read the codes to tell me why my ABS / ASC lights are on.

I'm in INPA programme.

However, it's told me why my airbag light is on, which I already knew was "seatbelt occupancy" so it confirms that it is communicating with my car.

My car is 1997 so I have to select "old car" and then E36 option. The ASC / ABS are under "chassis" but none of the options give any error codes.

Can anyone help ?

My MOT expired last December and I need to clear the warning lights as I'm wanting to get back on the road

I'm thinking it's most likely a wheel sensor but need to find out which one before I start beating them out.

At £80 each it can be expensive

Might have to sell my sports seats to pay for it

I just replaced the fronts as you have to beat them out! I used pattern parts nowhere near 80 quid for the pair. The rears should come out ok to clean up for a start. Unless there's someone local that can help read the codes.

Update,
I was able to have a bit of time on the Zed yesterday and I've finally got it sorted for the MOT. I had to beat the sensor out with an old chisel, a punch and a big hammer. I bought a pair of replacement sensors from Germany for £20 the pair, delivered, complete with 36 month guarantee. Only needed to change one so I've got a spare.
Before I fitted the replacement, I lightly sanded it with medium grade abrasive paper so that it should come out easy, should I have to change it again in the future. Went in nice. Went for a quick spin and the ABS / ASC lights went out after less than 50yards so I'm well happy, firstly because the job is done and secondly that I didn't pay £79 for the sensor.

Next I had a look at the airbag light problem. I took the passenger seat out, undid all the connectors and just plugged them back in again. Then cleared the code.
Put the key in ignition and "jobs a guddun" , no airbag light. Wish all jobs were this easy.

Car is now ready for an MOT, so I'm booking her in for next Saturday morning, and fingers crossed, I'll be ready for the new season.

Needless to say I'm pleased as a dog with two dicks =))

Well done :)

What make of wheel sensor? And/or do you have a link?

My Z3 has DSC so I was limited anyway as they are less common aftermarket.

Good news mate, always nice when things go well. Hope the M.O.T. goes just as well.

Tony.

Thanks Tony, should go through ok once I've put my new wheels on. It wouldn't pass with my current wheels as they're running a full set of Kojak's

Everything else seems ok. Fitted new discs and pads all round a few weeks ago

Good news that you've got it sorted electrical problems can be less than straight forward to sort sometimes :)

@Jack Ratt

What's the longer term view on the quality of the wheel sensors? I definitely need to order up a pair now.

Thanks
They come with a good guarantee so I'm not too concerned at less than £13 each. BMW want £80 each. I made my choice, but you may decide differently
