I have a saggy undercarriage - @oldcarman compose yourself..

I could hear a scraping noise from the front and close inspection revealed the cable ties (installed by PO) to hold the undercarriage in place had given up.

Other than a new BMW part which will probably deteriorate quite quickly - I have seen this stateside

But at $180 it is a little rich for me.. has anybody come across a cheaper alternative or willing to make one for me?? :D costs and beers reimbursed

cheers

Ash

Hi Ash, sorry to hear you're dragging yourself around these days. I wish I was still teaching IA that piece could have been a great Grade 8 project and could have been sold as a fund raiser. Sorry! JIM

Yes Jim, it is slowing me down! In all honesty the item above is over engineered - but then how to justify $180 for a sheet of alu with 2 brackets..

You would probably also have import tax to pay on top of the price

Ash, make a cardboard template and try it in position on your car. Trim it to suit with scissors. When you've got the shape you want trace round it onto a piece of sheet aluminium or steel. You can pop rivet a couple of brackets to it.

Save youself a few quid and feel emense pride at "Doing It Yourself"

I'll give it a go, to be honest I didn't think it would be so easy. They list it as .08" alu which is ~2mm so I guess this would be ok? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aluminium-Sheet-1mm-1-2mm-1-5mm-2mm-3mm-4mm-5mm-6mm-Various-Sizes-/261248360087?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=560213341039&hash=item3cd39d9e97

Just need to work out the other dimensions when its dry to stick my head under

I'd go into your nearest technical school, I'm sure they'd assign a student to the project. While I was at Uni and teaching IA we did lots of projects like this one only charging for the materials used. Most of the time we were given an extra donation which I put in a fund to buy new and improved tools to improve the students projects and learning. JIM

@David Cullen correct on your assumptions, I have emailed the guys that make the alu undercarriage to ask for some dimensions, disguised as a fitting query to help me out. Will probably copy them and use alu - would marine ply not get soaked? I've never worked with alu or marine ply so not sure on which would be best.

They make boats out of marine ply, so a bit a water wont hurt it. A couple of coats of yacht varnish will help too
