I'm still not getting my head properly round these self-adjusting clutch wear indicators.

How worn is this clutch from the pictures?

And I'm still keen to know how I'd retension the mechanism if I took it off for inspection. I know new ones come with a removable fitting that does the job.

But if I took this off right now, what happens when I put it back? Would it retension itself? If not how would I do it?

Good explanation here with pictures.

Comparing yours with the pictures of the new one yours looks well worn, not sure you have to tension anything when actually fitting it, its just a case of using the supplied centering tool, seems the unit is already set, once centred the lock is removed allowing the springs to take up the tension. That said if you remove yours then the lock wouldn't be there to lock it, once removed I don't see that you could refit it without the lock being first applied, is there a way to wind it back and put a lock back on or is it a case of fitting a new unit?

Looking at the pics of yours and the new install example on the instructions is it not worn ? Not sure how much movement these have new when released but looks like releasing it to check is a no no ?

If you're going to run this car and you have any doubts there is no easier time to change it.

I agree, no sense in putting a worn clutch back in.
l had a new clutch in my 3.0 and it's so much nicer to drive, the old clutch was about 60% worn.
I had it replaced as it sometimes had a bit of drag in the lower gears.
But now the bite point is lower, it engages more positively, and the pedal just feels better.

If I was doing the job again I'd routinely change the clutch. But without positive proof it was close to needing replacement, timescales didn't permit. The engine needed to go back in tonight and the hired crane has to go back now.

I might come to regret it I know. But I'm still left unsure of how to read the wear indicator and how to retension a clutch, eg replaced after removal for inspection.
