Just read Lewis Hamilton could be earning 3/4mil a week (40mil a year) if he gets what he wants from new contract with Mercedes. Forgive me for thinking if I had anything to do with it then I'd be looking to save 20+ mil a year giving his job to a up and comming younger driver. We've all seen that there is other talented drivers out there so maybe this sort of money could be seen as get what I can cos this is not gonna last. Hope they see sense and offer him half and maybe give the other half to cancer research. (Looking out my window for any stray pigs flying around.)
Nothing against this very talented driver but surely now's the time to say "sorry you've just become too expensive when we've now seen other real talented drivers that could be as good or even better" it's time to let you go and let the public see some proper racing up front, so how does £800 a week plus a new Z4m grab you..=))=))=)) No laughing matter Lewis we know loads of people be more than happy with it, just go on .org and you'll see if you don't believe us.

Know what you mean Roy, but when they get to this level, its not a bout the money, after all he doesnt need it. Its just a measure of his talent against the other drivers. If someone gets 10 mill, he says I'm 4 times better so need 4 x worth. Like most other top sports earners or celebrities.
They could pay them a smaller amount with a bonus if they win a race.

Like your idea of doing it for £800  I do it too for that, so long as they didn't give me the Z ;)

You can tell Im getting bored Toby, taking it out on the rich. Just got back from my lockup after running the engine up but not gong out in it. Done a bit of wiring and soldering but couldn't get the new DRLs to work, when your fingers are so cold it's hard to stay out and so let the job get the better of me, at home in the warm now coffee in one hand car mag in other.
DRLs can wait till spring.
:thumbsup:Roy.

PS; not even if it was for free.

Bet George Russell would do it for a fraction of the money just to be in that car, but I suppose for Lewis its a case of when you've got it flaunt it.
You don't win all those races/championships and break all those records by happenstance or luck.
Personally, having zero interest in football can't understand how players can be worth anything like what they get paid either.
But then people think plumbers are overpaid........Just going out to get the Roller serviced, will need to change another ballvalve to cover the cost....

Sir Lewis Hamilton, why ? I do hope it's because he does charity work that I dont know about.
It's not like he even lives here paying taxes.

All top 'earners' get too much and don't really pay enough tax. Remember watching the news years ago when there was talk of raising tax on top earners and this chap who was one of the richest in the UK was playing hell about how much tax he would be paying, which was a lot. BUT, even if he was paying the higher rate he would still be in the top few richest people plus it wouldn't change his lifestyle at all. Compare this with an ordinary working family facing a tax increase and their ability to pay bills etc, can be severely compromised. Oh, and of course the tax increase for the rich was not implemented!

I don't understand this rationale that the richer you are, the more you should be taxed.
Because tax is a percentage of everyone's earnings, richer earners automatically pay more anyway.
Why should the percentage also be higher?
A millionaire earner already contributes a lot more to the UK budget, (that we all use) than we individually ever could.
They are paying more for the same services that we all pay for, and to top it all most of them don't even make use of those services.
They should feel hard done to, not us.

"If you can pay more then you should"
They already do..

The average UK salary is £38,600. Tax and Ni contributions equate to £8,712
Sir Lewis Hamilton's salary, £40,000,000. Tax and Ni contributions equates to £18,788,860
I think he pays enough.

It just smacks of jealousy,
Good luck to them, and for those that obey the rules, thanks for those millions you contribute .
The question is how many avoid paying.

I'm curious as to how much you think it should be increased ? As for the top earners - yes their income seems eye watering, but obviously the businesses employing them think the outlay is warranted.

Some figures for you

Top tax take is 45 % of income. Increase it too much and the high earners may just depart for somewhere where they pay less. Or they may decide its not worth trying to earn more - a bigger % of nothing is ??

The top 1% of earners in this country account for 27 % of income tax - that's a massive chunk.
The median income taxpayer has taxable income of 22K.

Approx 54 million employed of which 31 million paid income tax, leaving 43% approx. not paying any income tax - these figures from 2014-15.

Rather than hit the high earners and contributors, better to tackle the illegal VAT avoidance - in 2019 this was approx 650 mill. per week !! Twice what we paid to the EU
Not from the likes of Amazon, Starbucks etc. who use legal means to get around it. This was basically the black economy cash deals.

Perhaps some have misunderstood my comments, I'm not 'anti rich'. I'm a big fan of Lewis Hamilton and if can he get 40 million per year good luck, but nobody really 'earns' that kind of money, they are just fortunate to be in a position to get it. If he paid 50% tax it would make no difference to his lifestyle etc. I'm not saying he should, just making a point. Must agree that it is tax avoidance that is the much bigger problem whether it is technically legal or not. £38,600 may be the 'average salary', but not the salary of the average person. What percentage of the population get paid less than £38,600 for example? However, I feel that this is not really the platform for political debate and would much rather be reading about future road trips than discussing economics on the zroadster forum.

H ha ha, I’m just jealous I can’t afford to be a tax dodger. Alls fair in love and politics, so if you don’t like what you pay in tax find somewhere where you’ll be better off, best country in the world to live in so pay up if you earn it. That’s why the majority of the rich in this country stay and use off shore to keep what they believe should be theirs. Don’t see em moving away in droves, do we??? Simples in it. =)) =))=))

Hello,

Here is another way of looking at it. If Sir Lewis retires because he doesn't get what he decides he "deserves", I won't watch F1 as much as I did, because I watch it mainly for his talents. If other people did the same, F1's TV and sponsor revenues would be reduced thus leaving less wages for everyone involved in F1, potentially instigating some teams to pull the plug.

Also those private jets cost a bit to run you know. Leave the poor boy alone;)

I wonder what the scenario will be in 2022 when there will be budget caps?
