My 96 has six speakers. Two in the footwells and two tweeters in each door. No "rear" speakers.

The premium package in my 98 has a mid and a tweeter in each door, a full range in the kick panel, and a rear speaker as well, also a woofer directly in the center behind the seats between the rollbars. That's 9 locations. My woofer box had 2 4 inch bass drivers in it when I removed it and replaced it with a single aftermarket unit.
Also, my car came with a Harmon Kardon multi-channel amplifier with cross-over to drive all those speakers. The amplifier is located on the gas tank side of the vehicle (passenger side in the USA) in the trunk opposite the antenna assembly behind the carpet. Also standard in my case was a CD multi-changer in the trunk and a Blaupunkt Radio.
I have replaced the radio twice. Removed the CD Changer (incompatible with aftermarket radios) and replaced almost all the speakers with aftermarket units since the surrounds on all the speakers failed a few years ago. I am still using the original amplifier.
