Just joined, not an owner yet but looking at a Z3, early 1999, 1.9 , 94k. Have inspected most things using the guides on this site & chatting to another owner. I test drove it a few days ago & after less than half a mile there was an almighty thump from underneath , looking in the rear view mirror a " bit" had fallen off that seemed to resemble the size of a break calliper! Gently breaking & pulling in safely my passenger rushed off to retrieve the " bit ". Once back in the car he explained that it was an exhaust damper. What puzzles me is that this " bit" which weighs about a kilo, doesn't seem to do anything , my question therefore is.....does it ?
Will the car need a new one to pass an MOT ?

Welcome Simon!

There is a large weight attached to the exhaust which is supposed to help with resonance or balance or something. You have however managed to improve the power to weight ratio to a minor degree ;). Won't have any bearing on the MOT unless it falling off left a big hole, but I'm sure our resident MOT tester will be along soon to comment...

Hi Zimon and welcome from me near Lincoln. As Gaz correctly says unless the damper dropping off damaged anything else under the car when it fell off it wouldn't affect the M.O.T. It would be advisable to have a good look under the car to make sure all is well though.:)

Tony.

Hi from Canada! As Tony said get under that car and have a good look at everything. Things falling off on a test drive are not usually a good sign but if all else checks out may be a great price lowing negotiation tool. Good luck, JIM

Hi from Devon & welcome to the forum.
If you haven't already then have a look at a few others before going ahead. It will give you a flavour for what's good & what's not...
Good luck!
