Thanks Tony Nice motor my next one will be an auto. My 1.9 Exhaust rattles so the replacement I want with more Growl also I find the gear change a bit lumpy

Lumpy gear change can be a few different things, but I've found changing the gearbox oil has made a difference on mine. Do you know which bit of your exhaust is rattling?

I put my car in for gear box and engine oil change the mechanic said the gearbox oil will not need changing as it is life time oil, I tend to agree with you as many have changed their gear oil and found a difference. As for exhaust the catalyst part rattles and the back oval pipe box. My replacement I would like to have more growl, also the emmissions have a history of being high.

The most popular growl appears to be Longlife who seem to tailor it to suit individual requirements. Just google it to find local supplier. I have a Cobra on mine which I am pleased with but it's all down to personal choice.
 
No such thing as a lifetime oil unless the car `dies' young!
 
Hello B2BW, when BMW say Life time they mean around 3 - 5 years or typical life time of first ownership. I would change the oil, you need to use Redline D4 ATF in a manual gear box. High emissions will be partly due to your rattling cat and also the lambda sensor will need changing due to age and probably miles, cat you can get for £100, lambda fit only Bosch genuine replacement. For the exhaust I recommend the Cobra cat back stainless, certainly growls.
 
I'd ask him what he would define the lifetime of a gearbox to be ;) To be fair to him though I think most garages say that as I've heard so many others getting that exact message too. The other thing people get told is that they are sealed for life and you can't change the oil at all :banghead:

I get my gearbox and rear diff oil changed every inspection II service as it only adds and extra £50-60 at the garage I use.
 
The "Filled for life" comes from BMW themselves. In my owners handbook under filling capacities it states- Manual Gearbox, Automatic transmission--- Permanently filled, no oil changes. And for Final Drive --- Permanently filled, no oil changes. Not that I agree with it, I changed the oil and filter in my Auto box last summer.
 
Nice looking car. I just had the gearbox oil changed in my steptronic auto and it has made a difference for sure. My mechanic worked for BMW and he said BMW state life time but that doesn't mean lifetime of the car as stated above.
 
Thanks guys this is great for me as I know nothing about the Z3 I have heard about the cobra exhaust and it seems what I am looking for, as for the Gear oil mine is a manual and yes I am going to change it any ideas what type.

Does the 1.9 box need different oil ?
Has to be GL4 rated 90w-75 in the M.
I used castrol multi trans in mine.
Made so much differents! Smooth changes even from cold.

The bmw sealed for life is bull....
 
It has to meet the requirements for MTL LT-1 which you will find will be on the box sticker, the Redline D4 ATF meets these requirements plus provides good surface adhesion and temperature control allowing for more smoother changes when cold and from initial starting. It also provides the GL4 level of protection, so it is not corrosive to yellow metals.
