Hi Geoff , I' m no expert but I seem to recall having a similar issue on a car a few years ago . Turned out to be the tail light had blown and must have been the way the filament landed was shorting out the circuit . Hopefully its just a simple fix like this for you too.

Code reader won't tell you anything the Z3 system is not that sophisticated like the Z4's which has a bulb monitoring system. Take the offending sidelight unit out and inspect the wiring at the bulb holder for damage/corrossion, ensure they are clean and not shorting out. Do check out all the otrher sidelights as @Jim B suggests above.

The garage said late on Friday afternoon that they had re soldered a wire back on but where i dont know, so will find out more on Monday but they said the problem is on both nearside side lights, do you happen to know the wiring run of both nearsiid side lights as maybe shorting out along the way ?

Front loom comes through engine bulkhead behind fuse box left side runs along left side of engine bay to headlight and sidelight. Rear from fuse box inside car under carpet to rear boot bulkhead to then inside boot left side to left rear light and across to the right rear unit.

Do you happen to know if the wires are also in the Loom of Doom ?

If you need a wiring diagram, take a look in the resorces tab at the top of the page and download the appropriate electrical guide for your model of car. There are two versions one for 1998 on and one for year 2000 on. Go to the index on either and look for right parking light to link to the diagram page for that circuit. It is in pdf format so you do need Adobe on your computer.

If the number plate lights are fed from the n/s rear sidelight fuse it could be the so called loom of doom Geoff.

The high level brake light wires will be in the loom of doom but not the sidelights, however the loom of doom will join the main front to back loom inside the boot before branching off upwards to where it emerges at the top of the boot.

Would it be worth exploring this area ?

Yes it's the most common failure point for broken wires usually affects the central locking strip the outer off and check the individual wires for breaks and corrosion solder repair any found and put heat shrink on then rewrap the loom
