6 Ignition coils, detach the electrical plug, undo the 10mm retaining bolts and pull the units up and out. When refitting put a dab of Dielectric grease on the ends to assist them locating on the top of the spark plug, it will assist you getting them out the next time. When they are out take a look down the spark plug well and see if there is any evidence of engine oil in there. If there is its a sure sign that the centre plug well gasket has failed due to hardness from age and repeated heaty cycles. Remedy for that is to renew the cam cover gasket, get an Elring brand set which includes the 15 cam cover rubber seals that sit under the cover retaining bolts, do not reuse the originals, they wont compress enough to achieve a good seal.
Do double check the part number applicable to your car on Realoem parts site using your Vin Number here

Can anyone tell me what this is please; haven't seen anything similar on You Tube ignition coil vid's. Thanks
I assume you mean the little part with the green wire. I don't know. I don't have one. There's number on it. Google is pretty good at searching part numbers.

But, just out of interest, where does the green wire go to?

I see what your asking now since @Duncodin spotted the green wire.
I do know that there are the two wires, one brown and that green one attached to the metal rail holding the coil packs, the brown one is an earth wire and I assume the green one you have would also be an earth why its green instead of brown I don't know. I have seen that should these be forgotten to be reconnected when they have been disconnected it will fry the engine DME so always ensure they are reconnected. The black object on the green one looks like some kind of resistor to me, might be shown on a wiring diagram to confirm.
Just had a look through the Electrical Trouble shooting manual in the resources thread that only shows brown single wire as the earth connection for the coil packs, no green wire in the diagram. The Black thing will be a resistor.
Pretty sure my 2003 Z4 M54 engine wires are both brown not noticed a resistor there.

Not sure as well but looking at it and where its located i would say its an interference suppressor to stop radio interference from the ignition coils.

Thanks Each. The Electrical Troubleshooting Manual is a good addition to my growing library. Yes, I'd Googled the part number but drew a blank. The green wire disappears into the Ignition coil pack wire cluster bar. I'm wondering if this is a P.O. after market capacitor installed to dissipate the ignition 'noise' to ground; bit like old style spark plug cap resistor? I only noticed it when replacing the valve cover gasket, amongst other maintenance tasks detailed elsewhere for reference.

That makes sense.
I have one too (2001 M54 free litre). No mention of it in the Bentley's book. All photos for M52 or M54 I could find do not show it.

Thought I'd ahare this interesting foible; or maybe this is how older ecu's work? Following what was quite a major maintenance overhall I took the car out for a spin yesterday to check for any problems. Not far down the road the engine started to falter with a slight misfire and would not respond to gentle persuasion; the check engine light came on, so I limped home and thoroughly checked all of the connections to the DISA and MAF. All looked sound, so I slept on it. Took it out this morning and guess what; the engine ran as sweet as a nut right through the rev. range, but the check engine light is still on. My theory is that the ecu was in the process of recalibration following the various changes to the emission control system and has now reconfigured settings. If that's so I just need to reset the check engine light. fingers crossed it's nowt to fret about.

Update on the Check engine light interesting foible.

I found this WickiHow article about resetting the Check Engine Light after the service . 3 options on how to reset the light, so given that the engine was now running sweet I went with method 3, and after a 30 mile trolley today and stopping for coffee, the engine light disappeared - hey voila!
