Car 2.8 auto - been driving like a dream until this afternoon.. now ticks over lumpy like it's running on 4 cylinders instead of 6.. drives perfect, smooth and fast.. but when ticking over its lumpy as hell.. ideas and suggestions welcome

Check you have no broken blades on the cooling fan. Mine was exactly the same, ran fine but felt like the whole car was rocking on tickover. Other than that, failing plugs or leads maybe.

Check your inlet hoses after the maf sensor you may have a tiny split in one letting unmetered air in and causing the problem.

Looks like l've found the culprit.. this little elbow on the air intake system.. could actually put my finger into the split..

Where exactly is it situated mate? If it's common fault I'd like to check mine. Well done for finding it so quickly.

Another added to the list... Losing track of how many of those I've changed on my own Z3's and others in the ZedShed.
Yep, add mine to the list as well Gary.

Had this changed by my mechanic this morning.. The thin elbow pipe broke off the old one as it was being removed.. Completely perished.. and my mechanic wasn't that impressed with the fit of the new one, he said the way it fitted on would apply continued pressure on the elbow which would lead to premature splitting in the future.. A poor design in his opinion.. still car now all hopefully sorted for the new forest cruise.. just glad this didn't happen during that weekend..

And the moral of this story.. always make sure you carry a roll of duct tape in the boot of your Z3!
