I have a 1998 Z3. Had a new hood put on by C E Moore Coachtrimmers Ltd in London. Mainly as water was coming into the driver side window. New hood, now only a dribble comes in. He suggested I replace the rubber seal around the front window but I'm good with a little trickle of water and the hood looks great, and I'm happy with the result overall.
Last weekend the alarm started going off every time I pressed the key fob to unlock the doors! Drove me crazy. Replaced the battery in the key fob. No change, Re-initialised the key fob. No change. Then for no reason other than thinking it was an electrical issue I opened the boot to see the battery. That was also new months ago. To my surprise there was about an inch of water around the battery. I go back to Halfords thinking it might be battery acid. Nope. Water. No drain there so had to mop it up. But alarm is still going off. Then I started looking for the tilt sensor after reading the forums. Finally found it on the left of the boot under the carpeting. Took a bit of looking! It was under water!! OMG.
So then I mop out the water and leave the boot to dry out. I noticed that the tilt sensor looked newly wet - I mean there was not a lot of evidence to suggest it has been under water a long time - no rust and the sensor looked undamaged. Day later, no more alarm. Thank God as the neighbours were going to kill me as I leave for work at 6.30am.
So now I see that the back of the boot is damp, really damp. Just under the rear window. Soaked. I had just driven in a seriously bad rain storm. So back to thinking the new hood has something to do with the problem. The alarm doesn't go off any more after getting rid of the water around the tilt sensor. But the water issue remains. Next time it rains I'll have to go mop out the boot. Livable but not an exciting prospect.
My question is - what do you recommend I do? Go back to C E Moore Coachtrimmers? and say that the seal isn't working? He charged me £810 to put on the new hood. My car is on the street in London so I'm not keen to start taking apart the hood myself. I don't think the water is coming in from anywhere else. Could be the drains being blocked, but the water in the boot was substantial. Any thoughts?
