Very odd - stopped for petrol, started up and no rev counter and the service lights stayed on (4 greens). Everything else ok - pulled up at destination 5 miles further on - left about half hour later and everything back to normal. Hoping it's a one off and not an ongoing intermittent fault. I wondered if the excessive temps we've been having may have something to do with it Any suggestions please?

Thanks Shelly - it's been working perfectly since the 30 minute rest.

There have been a few listed issues with dash @mrscalex has had some personal dealing with dash issues and has put a bit of time into some of the zed 3 electrical systems.
From a personal perspective 2 or 3 times after me taking ownership of my Dakar zed my dash failed ( warning lights all working same with odometer counting up miles) but no rev ,speedo ,fuel or temp guages .
First time after I stopped and restarting all good
Second time packed in when I was out restarting didn't help drove home checked following night all okay again
So ripped off the cowling and lower dash panel had a look at all the wiring and plugs all looked fine.
Few weeks went by ( zed not a daily but still gets about 6 - 8k a year on it ) all was well
The 3 rd time it didn't work when I went to start the zed looked at everything again still wouldn't work using phone and sat navigation as speedo but no fuel guage was a did iffy.
Didn't work for a couple of weeks I had started looking at what could be wrong and what could be done ( info not the best)
Then it started working and ( 🪵 touch wood 🪵🙄)
Remains so till this day so the long and short of that is
It may be nothing but also may be the start of something I'm sure Robert will pitch in at some point as I have tagged him on this thread he may be able to give you a better direction if the problem persists ( which it may not ) .
Stephen.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Stephen, I can only keep my fingers crossed that it was a one off. A bit unnerving as I've got all the mechanics sorted and didn't think of the electrics!

Biggest common zed 3 electric issue is
' The Loom of Doom :eek::eek: '
As its commonly known as is the bit of loom in the boot
20210721_213406.jpg

Usually linked to central locking related issues wire outer plastic coating breaks open as gets brittle doesn't like getting bent about with opening of the boot wires touch causing issues.
Face-lift model zeds that have Dsc rather than Asc can have issue with the sensors under the passengers seat if they get wet.
But on the whole the electric stuff fitted is reliable sometimes get engine sensors fail ( best replace with genuine bmw one) but again it not all the time common failures .

Plenty of people on here with good knowledge of these cars that will be more than happy to help out .
You'll find this forum a great community of people from all walks of life who share a common love for these cars.
Since joining in 2016 I have found the forum and its people ( which is a big chunk of what makes it such a great forum and also @GazHyde and Co who run all this ) a great place to be a member of
My first run was the Lake District run with @andyglym and since I have been a group leader on most of Andy's large number runs. ( time for a plug ) Andy has a run in September a scaled down a touch one which still has space .
This year will be the 6th year the Scottish run has been held since attending the first one that @Brian H organised I have organised the rest of them which I have hugely enjoyed ( even though its a bit stressful to )
Time for another plug.
Still limited space available for this years Scottish run.
Details for both these runs can be found on the forthcoming events thread or contact myself or Andy via pm for details if anything you need to know.
I also run the Picture of the Month thread and new zed picture entries are always welcome..

Stephen.

The issue I had my cluster is quite a common one. The speedo works and nothing else does. Usually okay after it's warmed up. Requires a cluster repair by a specialist to locate failed components. I'm sure cluster failures can manifest in other ways but that's the common one.

Funnily enough I had something very similar to yours myself tonight. The ABS & brake pad wear sensor lights were intermittently flickering and then stayed on. Later on went away. I will check the error codes tomorrow. Not sure I expect to find anything. Just for now working theory is the heat has caused a weird problem.

Thanks to all for the info/help - I'll be having a drive out today again to see what happens. Can't see any problems with the 'loom of doom' but it was a brief visual inspection.
Stephen, I've found this site to be an excellent place for info and help. In fact, my first port of call was @Nodzed enquiring about his wheels, suspension etc on his Z3M (good luck with your sale - such a cheap M - if only!!). He put me on to Zshed HQ and from there I've ended up with a car which is an absolute joy to drive.
I'm in Hampshire so don't venture too far north yet, I do look out for South runs though. Good luck filling the Scottish spaces - and I'll get my camera out for a pic of the month sometime soon.
mrscalex - I hope it's down to excessive heat and will report back if there's a recurrence - subject this forecast torrential rain for Saturday, I was thinking of a Basingstoke Zshed visit - if I go I'll ask if someone has a code reader and check if anything untoward appears.
Cheers all - off now to turn that ignition key!

Your more than welcome to pop in we'll be finishing that Z3M. We're by no means specialist in things electrical but happy to look. The cluster comes out very easy I had mine repaired in the past due to a couple of cracked soldered joints.

Thanks Lee, I've just clocked up a few more miles today, including a few stops and everything working perfectly. Hopefully just a one off. As you suggested, I had the steering rack reconditioned and the car now feels planted and goes exactly where pointed! If I make Saturday I'll have a mate in tow who's recently got a facelift 2.8. he's in the same position as I was a few years ago - not knowing what a properly sorted Z drives like. I've told him about your 2.8 and I think he'd like a brief look over by your team to see where you suggest he should direct his dosh to improve the car. Brakes and gearbox pins were my suggestion but I suspect there could be more. Anyway, hopefully catch up this weekend or soon if can't make it.👍
