Hi all,
A quick post to introduce myself - I'm Warren from Worcestershire UK and have recently joined the forum having bought a 1997 Z3 1.9 which has done 100k. I am so glad to have found ZRoadster.org and I wanted to say a big thank you for all the posts and wisdom on this site which have proved hugely valuable already.
You will see below my Z3 appears to have all the classic issues ... I have always had a BMW of some sort, but was never brave enough to tackle the oily bits in the past - so this is my first attempt at a project car and to learn the basics of car maintenance / repair.
Work undertaken to date:
I found the third brake light was unplugged as the bulbs were mostly rusty and blown - this was all cleaned up and replaced with LEDs and all now working fine.
Headlights were very hazy/foggy - this was fixed with a Holt's repair kit and after a few hours they came up very nicely.
Next job was the driver and passenger seat bushings - all was going well until I discovered the soaking wet carpets. So rear carpet out and brought into the house to dry off (made a cut in the carpet around the gear knob area to remove), and front section exposed as much as possible to a portable heater. I took out most of the centre console but bottled out of a full removal due to all the wires around the heater / blower. Then after consulting the forum, I have cleared all the drain holes in the hood area and under the scuttle panel. Not sure if this will have solved the issue so will look at the A pillars and door seals also. I'll keep it in the garage or under a half cover until all done.
Removing the console enabled my to change the hazard light switch which wouldn't stay on. Removing the rear section of carpet enable me to clean and check the connections around the fuel tank as my fuel level indicator is very temperamental.
Carpets and seats all back in, the only breakage was the screws on the lid hinges of my rear storage box ... I'll need a new one, I guess ebay is the way?
Yes the wing mirror mount is broken.
Future plans are to start with a basic service and tentatively move on to brakes and suspension then bodywork , and no doubt encoutner other classic Z3 problems on the way - what could go wrong!!.
Looking forward to being part of the forum and learning from all the advice and tips you have.
Best wishes
Warren
