I looked into a non OEM roof made by BAS international. Whilst the prices were good there were too many little bits that made me not bother. The fabric looked thinner and ever so different different, the rear screen was bonded in and had an impregnated stamp in the bottom LHS - looked cack. Finally the side reliff pockets were missing, but apparently you can have them with the pockets.
Hi, I purchased a BAS hood 2 years ago to replace my "beige" one that was worn on the usual wear points and I couldn't maintain the colour (it was simply too light and impractical). I chose the Green Mohair to go with my Boston Green car and I have nothing but complements from people that have seen it. There is no difference (IMHO) to the fabric itself and whilst the rear screen is bonded in I had to ask myself what is it with all this zipping in of windows. My previous hood had worn out whilst my zipped in window was as clear as if it were new so I gained nothing from having the option of zipping out worn plastic window and zipping in a new one. The only advantage to me is if you damaged the plastic window then you could just replace that but by the time I wanted to change the hood I had owned Zippy for 9 years and like I said the hood wore out before the window.

IMHO if someone could investigate where in the car the hood rubs, when the roof is down, and addresses that, then that would vastly increase the life of the hood. I can see that in time my new hood is going to "go" in exactly the same place as the last one so there's some friction between the hood and the body of the car (with the movement of the hood when you're on the move). I try and put my roof blanket over the entire roof before opening it, but confess to not to doing it every time.

The impregnated stamp in the bottom left hand corner is simply the "standard" stamp and I have to say the only time I see it is when I clean the car, it certainly doesn't impede vision, it's no different to me than the one on each of my glass windows.

Yes you can get one with the pocket in the side but what does that actually do, what difference does it make being there ??

Another nice thing to hear from the fitters of my hood was that in his opinion, they are the best hoods available, unless you want to pay £1,700 from a dealer (2010 price to customer).

I just thought I'd reply as I own a BAS hood and whilst I am delighted with it, I don't expect you to change your mind, I just thought you might appreciate hearing from someone who owns one.

thats the trouble with the softtop matt,

mine is about 12 years old and in good condition for the age, but it still has storage marks that im not happy with.

im looking for a new one at the moment, just getting quotes.

even with a new one its best to store it with the hood up.

was that an official quote you have there for an original replacement?

many thanks

mark
That was a BMW supply price with trade discount.

Ive spoken to somebody who knows the company that produce them for BMW. They are the only company to make them with the zip out window. As they are contractually bound they will not supply one (understandably) so if you want an OEM roof with zipper then its big money.

Personally, If I am going to change it then I'll have to pay the money and get OEM. That said, its hard to justify spending all that for a few very minor marks that will likely reappear shortly anyway (well thats what my wife thinks on the matter)
Its hard to justify the cost of a new oem hood.

trouble is, a non perfect hood can spoil the look of these cars (look better with the hardtop imho).

if i change mine, it will have to be oem :)

Hi Snoops

Wow, see you are from Wigan! Not far at all. My Daughter goes to Winstanley College, not far from Wigan really!

Thank you very much for the insight and feedback on the BAS hood, it seems like the one I viewed may have been a different one?! Hmmm.

The stamp in the bottom left - not something I was concerned about from an obstruction POV more a detraction from the OEM 'look' really. I was hoping to be able to buy a non OEM roof without any visual indicators other than the rear screen not being able to be zipped out.

I think what you have sounds spot on and for most it would be perfectly fine, its just a small percentage of us are pretty anal (or sad!) about things looking as original as possible and the stamp, no matter how minor is one thing that would bug me that's all.

It is great to hear you are very pleased with your purchase though :) I hope it stays looking good; the green sounds far nicer than the beige too

What's your plan for the car Matt? If its to store and not use then replace. If not then leave it I say..
Maybe replace when you come to sell? As said it will wear even a new roof if your planing to use it..

God thats prestine and i thought mine was nice :-?? Well done matt for a great find :ymapplause:
Ive heard that yours is a pretty special car mate. :coolsteer)

There are a few things on mine that I will replace/improve when funds allow. First up is the roof -.

Thanks Matt. I do agree with the hoods wearing. My hood isnt 100% and i had phoned BAS to consider a new one, but the problem with that is, i never drive the car with the hood up so i would be what i consider damaging a brand new hood every time i take the car out in the summer, so at the moment i have put it on hold as i cant see the advantage of a new one. ;)

you can protect them with a blanket, its making the effort.

the car looks so much better with a crisp new hood.

I went to Winstanly College (nearly 30 years ago now though, scary!)

My nephew started there last September. He gets the school bus from Winwick Park which may go by yours ?

He's just got his first car and is into detailing already :D

Yeah it'll be the same bus I guess - My daughter gets the bus from Culcheth and it heads that direction.

It is frightening John isn't it, it was 22 years ago when I was in the same position as her. I went to North Trafford college and my dad used to run me to the train station in Glazebrook every morning. Ironically we now live in Glazebrook and my daughter uses the station at the weekends when she goes shopping to Manchester.
