Well where to begin introducing myself? I suppose hello is a good start!

My name is Katie and I'm sure I probably already know a lot of you lovely people from the z3 group on facebook, which I've been a member of for a good few years now! I don't know why I hadn't joined this forum before now (thank you for the good recommendation Stacey!), I suppose I just felt very well supported by the great community on facebook and hadn't thought about the benefits a good forum might offer too!

So a little bit about me and my z3 history...

I bought Felix 4 years ago and, looking back, I was so lucky to have found him! The man I bought him from down in Birmingham had been Felix's one and only owner since the day he picked him up from the showroom. He'd been the ex-demo model (sat out in their forecourt with all his whistles and bells to tempt people in to buy a z3!) so he has all the fabulous extras (his hardtop, a couple of roof covers, his hardtop lifter, the bigger spec 3.0 engine etc) apart from the heated seats - which I do wish I had! ;) I was given a shoebox containing every single receipt for every single BMW service or repair that he'd ever had done. So I felt really reassured that I was buying a good little and well loved car!

Sure enough, he's been fabulous these past 4 years and has had no major problems. We even drove him down to the south of france and italy on a driving holiday in the summer of 2013 which was a blast! I think sadly, things are now starting to show here and there as a result of ageing and general wear and tear - felix is getting a bit older and needs lots of TLC!
Last year, I had a small hole developing in one of his back silencers (he'd had it repaired before by the past owner - the receipt was in the shoebox for it!) and given the cost of an OEM exhaust, felix was treated to a new stainless steel exhaust from engine manifold to back tailpipes which is fabulous! Aside from that big outlay, he's never needed anything major doing to him.

He was showing very early signs of the infamous subframe failure that is common with the larger engined z's, but I called on a welding friend who liked to work on ralleigh cars to address the issue and reinforce his frame (sadly I couldn't afford to ship over Randy's kit, so sought the right kind of help closer to home) and so Felix seems to be A-ok on that score now.

I do now have a couple of new 'issues' that I am wanting to seek advice on, and am hoping the fellow zed enthusiasts on here might be able to offer me advice, suggestions or even dare I ask it - assistance! (I used to be a medical rep, so I'm quite used to driving the country and quite happy to drive places and meet new people!)

My main worry currently is that my coolant does appear to be going down a little quicker than I think it aught to. I must have topped it up quite significantly twice in the last 12 months I would say. The engine bay has been inspected and there are no obvious signs, but I am worried it might be a very very early sign of the head gasket beginning to fail - that said, he runs like a dream (always has) and there are no white gunky deposists in his oil. I'm just one of those people who believes in fixing potential problems in their early stages rather than waiting until the problems show and things break or desperately need doing (that's my dads mindset - typical yorkshireman!)

I have also recently (just today) had a new steering angle sensor put in and calibrated, as my traction control/dsc light did flicker on a bit too keenly on smooth corners - and the fault codes showed it was this sensor. When he fitted it today, he said he'd run the codes again and this time a new code was also showing up once or twice - my transverse acceleration sensor (supposedly located in a box under the drivers seat) given what I paid for this sensor, I'm not in any massive hurry to change another! Do people think that the transverse sensor is one that really needs doing? or will it likely be damaged again if water gets into the floor of the car (felix is pretty watertight - but I imagine we all occasionally get water leaking in from soft or hardtop at window when it really rains!)

I have to be much more careful with my money these days - as I gave up my great job to follow my dream. I used to be a territory manager in medical sales - but I always wanted to be the other side of the operating table where the surgeon was stood and not the rep! So I've given it all up, company audi, fuel card and all! to pursue my dream and am now studying. It's costly, but I believe where there is a will there is a way!

Felix is my little runaround and I rely on him so much. he's so well loved - i love driving him and I love looking after him. Long may that continue!!

If you've made it to the end of this essay like message! congratulations ;)

Hi Katie, and welcome to the forum from the other side of the Pond. I just read your wonderful story. Thanks for taking the time to give us all that information. Most of the members will be asking you for a few Pics of your car. There are several members who have the same model and can give you just the advise you are looking for. I have a 1.9 L '96 myself. Its a different engine so I wouldn't want to give you bad info, however, I'm sure the members will have you check all your connections. It certainly sounds like a slow leak but is there, nevertheless. It usually points to a problem that is just starting. The other members will probably mention that you could be developing a problem with the water pump. I have read where the pumps on these 6 cylinder motors should be replaced before they go completely bad as this could cause some nasty added complications. Members who are more familiar with this will explain further and give added information. I must tell you that you are in very good hands here for this kind of information. Good luck with this and I will be watching for their replies to you. Frankie

Thank you so much for the great reply Frankie!

I'm really pleased to be a part of the forum now! I just think it takes a fellow zed head to know where you're coming from! y'know? I'd been speaking to the guy who runs the BMW electronics garage when I went to collect my car today after it's steering angle sensor repair. And in relation to the possibility of early head gasket failure, he kept making comments like 'oh well it is getting old....' 'i havent done in a z3 in ages...' and I don't think a lot of these places do have respect or appreciation for beautiful and classic engineering and styling such as the Z3. It just reminded me why I only visit their garage once in a blue moon and won't be off back anytime soon! ;) I want to consult with people who love and appreciate the z3 and all it has to offer. And I fully believe that it's a car worth loving and looking after. It doesn't matter how old a car is - if you look after it well, it keeps on driving!

Yes you're right, the water pump is another possibilty! Hopefully I'll be getting it looked at next week to ascertain exactly what's causing it! But I really would be grateful for any help, advice and suggestions! it'd be lovely to find out if there are any z3 owners near me (or not too far away!) as well. Be fantastic to meet up

I'll see if I can get some pictures up! though my little profile photo to the left is of me & Felix :)

Hi Katie, and welcome from near Lincoln, to be honest, unless you're very unlucky, I think you can discount head gasket failure. As Frankie replied more than likely a slow leak on the cooling system some where. I t needs to be located and repaired before a major fault does occur though.

Tony.

Hi Tony! Thanks for your reply. That's hopeful news! Yes the guy I'm hoping to take my car to next week did mention that it could be the water pump too. Hopefully I'll have a better idea next week!

You're in Lincoln - that's not too far from me really! I'm in york. You're the closest fellow zed owner I've met (I've waved at a few who've passed me on the roads in york before - but they just look at me funnily and never wave back! Hehe)

Tony - ' is there anything specifically I aught to ask them to take a look at next week? Or would mentioning a possible slow leak in the cooling system be enough to point them in the right direction?

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome from frigid Canada!! Hopefully you'll find out the waterpump is leaking. Another place is your heater matrix which may have a small leak but usually you'll get an anti freeze smell and a film on your windows, at least that's what happens here. You could check under your carpets to see if there's any wet in the underlay. Good luck and again welcome!! JIM

Hi Katie and welcome on the forum of non face book members (some of us!)!
Thanks for the complete presentation , nice feelings and congratulations for the gorgeous Zed you have!
Also all respect for the challenge you take, regarding following the dream!
All in all the problems you have with the Zed are solvable and not the end of the world.
I'm sure some close research will point the reason of the missing antifreeze.
Enjoy the forum and the strong Ladies Team we have on forum!:)

Morning Katie from down here in Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire (live on the border) We let our Z3 3.0 go last year and never had issues with coolant. I would assume it to be either Water Pump or possible a hose starting to perish. How many miles has the car done ? I replaced our water pump when we got to 70k as a precaution, i believe the Bmw ones have plastic fins and the after market ones have the metal fins which for a change makes them a little more robust. If you have a hose starting to perish then get the Mech to check all the fitment joints of the coolant hoses. Another possible cause could be the heater matrix, check to see it does not stay hot when turned down as the controls could be faulty, (we had this on our Z3)

Hi Katie :welcome: from me. That's a big intro and a few big replies.
A number of potential leakage points have already been mentioned but if you can get the car on a ramp, a light inspection from underneath should find any leakage - you are not just looking for wet patches - any longer term leak will have dried out and left telltale white/green deposits.
If a head gasket is suspected, then a a bubbler test will confirm that. You can buy DIY kits on internet, very easy to use and any decent indy garage/mechanic should be able to do one cheaply. Dealer will usually charge you a fortune for such checks.
Good Luck

Hey Katie :D

Sorry I wasn't able to chat for long last night, long busy day and needed my beauty sleep (I need a lot of sleep!!). I think the replies you have had already go with most of what I would have said. I'm pretty sure that in the 5 years I've been kicking around the Z3 scene that I've not seen one 6 cylinder engine with a head gasket issue. These engines tend to be bomb proof except for the water pumps and a couple of other minor components. Not saying they don't, just can't remember ever seeing one which has!

Does your shoebox of receipts show anything related to a water pump change?

I have just added you to the Ladies Only section which we created a few weeks back.

Gary.

Hi Katie
Welcome from me in Walton on Thames, Surrey. Loved your essay and it gets top marks! I was a territory rep once and Yorkshire with North Lincs was my patch. I loved York so much history and that magnificent Minster.
I can see that you already have the guys that know giving you pointers on your potential concerns.
My belief is that the modern day mechanics don't get excited about enthusiast's cars like Zeds and most times it is better to seek the advice of a proper motor engineer although they are in decline these days.
Have fun.

Hi Katie, :welcome: from me too in Staffordshire:). Yours must be the longest (and best, so far...) intro thread posted here, and yes I did read right to the end.;) I wish I'd had a shoebox of receipts when I got mine. I see the guys in the know have given plenty of suggestions, hope you get it sorted soon and enjoy some summer top down driving.:D
