It's a wonder anyone survived this crash. The pilot unfortunately did not, but two other PoB were rescued.

Went over the grand canyon in a chopper fantastic,
but I feel safer in a plane, helicopters don't glide

When we did flight trials with Buccaneers and Phantoms on one or other of our now demised proper aircraft carriers we often left the carrier by Seaking helicopter.

The drill that we were given was, in case of a single engine failure, the pilot would land on the sea,'jettison' all baggage and attempt a single engine running take off.If this failed, all passengers would be 'jettisoned' and a take off attempted.

Fortunately this never happened but we had to wear immersion suits just in case.

The closest we came was a tail rotor gearbox failure as we were about to leave the ship :-s

Some helicopters will in effect glide by using auto rotate as with an autogyro.

I've been on a helicopter and the pilot simulated a double engine failure and we landed safely. I was completely quiet for that... My heart was in my mouth... He wanted to prove to me it was safe... I really would have taken his word for it...
