I can't choose the defrost setting with the control of my 1998 Z3 2.8. It allows me to select floor or vents. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Most likely it’s the control cable for the flaps in the heater box which need adjustment.

Mine was the same when I bought my car. The inner cable was stuck and the was just bending not moving in and out to move the flap. You can get to it if you remove the radio and see it with a torch and small mirror. I used some penetrating oil, pushed it back in and operated the switch a few times. It has been fine since February.

@Daz7401, thats all well and good if you have a small minor to get in the gap, if you do go down that road don't let the neigbours see and report you for mis treatment of the said minor!!

Tony , The temperature selection dial on mine will only rotate from full cold to just after the 12-0-clock position , cold and hot air will come out of the vents. I thinking the heater flap cable needs disconnecting ; the flap opened fully ; the heater control set to max hot and cable reconnecting. Does this idea hold any water?

You may find that it's a clip holding the cable outer gone missing/slipped, not too unusual with cars of a certain age. This bit of RealOem may help.

It does Paul. Back when I was a lad and all heaters worked this way usually you could see the flap levers on the outside of the heater box and observe what was happening. Trial and error usually prevailed

This is the rear of the switch pack .
The white, green and red levers are what the cables attach to.
The levers have a pin inserted into the track on switch rear the air direction can be turned full circle hot/cold can't.

The white lever is the hot / cold
The red and green operate together on slightly different cams Red one side green on the other.
16665460096072001255597798720497.jpg

The cables have non adjustable colour coded clips
16665461220428844739511748993223.jpg

That fit in the 3 square holes in the bottom of the switch pack the cable ends fit in their respective holes on lever ends

So if the centre console was out this is what you would see
20220924_135216.jpg

Now position wise the 3 cables run to the hot/ cold ( white) and windscreen/ centre vent (red) both go to driver side of heater box
16665468339445082203632519512222.jpg

As you can see the cable are securely to the box with spring clips ( one missing on this could also be your issue) .
The 3rd cable ( green) footwell goes to let of white sticker on picture above

Again spring clip holding cables on.

Hope this helps a bit as to where it all goes .

It could be the middle bulb. If it moves out of position it will foul the movement of the levers and restrict movement of the heater control dial. It may not be that but if it is, a quick and easy fix and worth checking...

Thanks Eddie , I do remove the radio and put my hand in but couldn’t locate any fouling , I thought the radio cabling might have been doing it. Another possibility ! 👍👍

If you move the dial whilst having a finger where the bulb goes in you will be able to feel it snagging, or not. If it is turn the bulb until the levers move past freely. If not then a tricky change of unit!

Could well be the cause of the problem , the dial is illuminated OK but the air direction next to it doesn’t illuminate , I was thinking the bulb might be blown . Thanks again for you input Eddie. 👍
