I recently fitted a Sony Headunit but as i have Harmon Kardon system fitted i used the correct lead that used the Rca preouts to feed the amp.
Although this improved the over all sound it was very quiet so even when on the highest volume 50 as soon as the car was moving with the roof down you can not hear it.
I have fitted the lead that feeds the H.K System with the stereo outputs and the difference is vast now its loud in the low teens.
The question i have is, is the standard bmw headunit amped or does it have 4v preouts as even the business unit was loud in comparison so im presuming it must be amped of sorts ?
