Morning Zedders. An old school friend who works for Westminster Council emailed me last night with this concerning bit of information -

'Once the dust has settled on the current crisis, climate scientists along with Greenpeace will be lobbying government hard to ban petrol and diesel cars over 20yrs old from public highways by 2030 in line with the government's plan to ban the sale of new fossil fuel cars. Also from 2025 cars over 15 years old will have a mileage limit of 5,000 imposed on them, reducing by 1,000 miles year on year until taken off the road at year 20. This is in response to the air quality readings that have improved by 50% since the lockdown began.'

If this gets passed it looks like we will have to convert our Zeds to electric if we want to carry on enjoying them :(

Any “official” signposting on this @Eddie Zedder ?

Can't see them managing to push that through Bryan, the cost implications to individuals would cause anarchy. Not saying it won't happen of course but it won't be easy, imagine guys such as @Mark Gutteridge with low mileage ///M's being told to scrap their cars that at the moment are worth £15-20k?

I’m an advocate of electric and hybrids, but, this won’t happen. The pollution from the number of cars over 20 years old is insignificant compared to that produced by commercial vehicles. They’re chasing the minority. Solutions have to be primarily aimed at newer vehicles that will be of far greater numbers. Some restrictions in order to not create unintended consequences of older cars being deliberately retained, yes, but, outright ban? Won’t happen.

Not yet, apparently some fine detail to be worked on and the age figures could be adjusted lower but I'm sure we will be hearing about it in the not to distant future.

Let's hope they don't, but I wouldn't be surprised if this happens sometime in the future. It will hit values no doubt, but we will be able to keep and use our cars but only on private roads, race tracks etc.

What we are definitely seeing is Planet Earth having a respite moment. This is bound to influence policy at some point.

They're going to have to build a lot more power stations before that becomes feasible, and that ain't going to happen in a hurry. Wait till the greens realise that they're pushing for more nuclear power generation, and watch the conflict on their faces. It's bad enough that a bunch of townies are shouting about how we shouldn't have log-burners and gas cookers out here, let them try living in a place where power cuts are a way of life.

There has to be viable and socially acceptable alternatives. Technology will go a long way to managing electricity supply issues even within current capacity but can also be used to manage any shortfall too. Going to need a balance and also acceptance that you don’t need a full charge every day. Will need education. Too many people complain about wind farms but want the benefit they bring. There will be increased restrictions on older vehicles. It’s the way to force change.

Unfortunately network capacity margin is shrinking. NG run with 5% in reserve, this used to be 10% but the number crunchers deemed that was unnecessary cost. This policy bit them on the arse with the wide scale blackouts last year. The company's involved were fined heavily.
The capacity is there at the moment but is pushed to the limit during a hard winter. It will shrink once all the coalers are closed and the take up of EV's accelerates. All that will be needed to break the system is a windless cold winters day and a couple of generator breakdowns and we will be in the dark.

Hook, line & sinker :D

Shouldn't worry too much Eddy, lots of organisations have lobbied for years and unless the gov of the day aren't worried weather they'll get voted in again I believe nothing will change that quick. ME?????? I'll buy a lightweight electric wheel chair with 3cwt of batts plus a decent brushless motor that will get me from 0-60mph in under 3sec on the pavement, wait for one of you lot in your EV to come along and if it's clear give you a go, stopping won't be a problem with my new carbon fibre driving gloves and huge ceramic discs, Getting cought won't be a problem either cos they'll have taken my licence away by then. Happy days.
