Ok so a xenon went out on the passenger side. After discovering that some genius at bmw decided that the process of changing a bulb needs to be keyhole surgery while inside a wheel well I got the job done.

Now I have what I can only describe as a shadow in the replaced light. Is there some trick to how the bulb needs to be positioned? It only seems to fit one way.

It's like there is something inside the projector but I don't see how that's possible.

Hmmm not sure about positioning but my first thought was a fingerprint on the new bulb. Might be worth checking.

So the xenon capsule has a kind of rod thing on the outside. Facing down is the way I think I installed it. Is that correct ?

When you buy a wiper blade or a bulb from halfords do they still offer to fit it for 2 shillings and 6pence?

No worries. It was a tough day. Me just being sensitive.
Even so. I assure you that I wasn't trying to be funny at your expense. I was trying to make a joke about my own ripe old age by referring to a coinage that hasn't been legal tender in the uk for over 50 years.

Back to a time when the local motor factor really would charge half a crown to fit any wipers or bulbs you'd bought.

Re Halford- Sajk is in South Africa so he won’t know that we have the luxury of buying bulbs from Halfords and they will fit it for a few pounds

just checked and they want £16.00 to fit Z3 bulbs so gone up a bit.

Think I paid a tenner a few years ago on a Ford Galaxy that was a pig to change bulbs - took the poor guy 30mins whilst I had a coffee and worked in the back on my laptop!
For some cars it’s well worth the fee!

Actually when I replaced the pass side where I have the problem it took me ages to a) get the igniter to lock, b) to get the retaining spring back on the igniter and then after 1 hour trying to get the cover over the light before fitting the wheel well cover I gave up and drove to my guy who looks after my Zs who fitted it in 90 seconds. I would happily pay to have someone do the keyhole surgery.

Meanwhile where I used to work we made a lot of money reinstalling headlight bulbs which had been fitted for “free” at Halfords in Lincoln. Because the young people who sold the bulbs had no concept of there being a right or a wrong way to fit them, especially the dip beam ones. As long as the bulbs lit up with the switch they assumed all was well.

Tony.
