As you may have read, I had a problem with the Z3’s MOT this year because of a duff reflector. I fixed that and was about to have the car re-tested when I found that the hazard warning lights didn’t work. I bought 2 new switches still didn’t work, it became a bit of a mystery as to what was wrong. Then I locked the car using the remote on the key and the indicators flashed, after that the hazard warning lights worked perfectly. The car passed its MOT.
Today we went for a run out in the car checked the hazard warning lights, not working. Locking the car made no difference.
Went for a drive. Locked and unlocked the car then tested the hazard warning lights working perfectly again.
Anyone any ideas as to what is wrong.

Hazard lights drive me mad. Ever time I turn the ignition on the hazards start flashing,Push switch down ,back up lights off until I ask them to work. 2 very good mechanics have tried, and the 2 separate car electricians. This has been occurring for 4 years or so. Fortunately ,I have explained this to two MoT testers and they both accepted it.

I’m no expert but this sounds an electrical issue. Is every wire etc connected to the correct corresponding wire/fixture? Any breaks in the circuit?

Definitely electrical, even changed the switch to try it. The electrician took one from another car it made no difference to my Z3 but it was OK in its donor car before and after. The bit that worries me if it causes trouble at MoT time.

Go into the "Resources" section of this forum and find the 2000 Z3 for Great Britain wiring diagrams. The others will not have your alarm circuit diagrams.

Your alarm system is in the ZKE (GM4) module. The module between the ZKE and the hazard light system is the "Crash alarm sensor". I suspect that it is this sensor that is playing up. Located drivers footwell.

Work through the wiring diagrams.
Use the parts locations lists in the back of the diagrams to find the parts.

Happy hunting.
