Having never owned a Z3 with the optional hardtop before, on day 2 of owning #14, I couldn't resist employing the help of the Mrs to explore the intricacies of how it all works.

Essentially this involved taking it off and putting it back on again - which also provided me the opportunity to check the condition of the soft top and make sure the roof motor works.

I know I should have done this when I picked it up but I was comfortable I was dealing with a genuine seller and was happy to take their word for it.

Fortunately as suspected the soft top and rear screen were in very good condition and had been put down with the original soft top protector attached which was an unexpected bonus.

The roof motor also functioned as expected but I found it very difficult to engage the roof locks - I suspect this is just down to the roof being stored a while inline with the seller telling me that they had had the hardtop fitted for an extended period of time.

Well the hardtop was removed and refitted with relative ease but the jury is still out on whether I will keep it. So on to my question which is related to the subject of my confusion (hopefully you are still with me here).

Between the seats is a switch (see picture) which although I'd assumed was for the heated rear window I expected it not to work because it didn't light up when I pressed it and having removed and replaced the roof I hadn't noticed any associated connections.

Imagine my suprise then when on the way home this evening I pressed the button because the rear screen had misted up and it did work - so my question is how is this possible and what is it that connects the button to the screen?

Essentially it's just a towel that coves the rear screen with elastic straps to secure it to the frame. It also comes with its own storage bag.
wow! Cool.
had never seen one!
i am using a blanket… maybe I have to search for one.
thanks.
