My mechanic friend wants to replace the handbrake shoes and the plates ??????
No worries I said I'll get the bits for you, can you tell me what I'm supposed to be getting not sure how to search for these plate things, if someone could post a link would be much appreciated.

Depends how bad the plates are. Usually the issue is that the shoe hold down pin holes have corroded away and the pins and springs no longer hold the shoes securely to the back plate.

Yes there is. It involves cutting a split in the new back plates so that you can fit them by "winding" them over the drive flange. Other wise you have the strip out both rear hubs and driveshafts which will require two new wheel bearings as well.
Try searching for Parking brake shoe replacement, rear back plate replacement .
