I'm just building back up up my rear suspension arms as part of a rear suspension rebuild. Putting in the handbrake shoes, the top spring seems to rub against the adjuster - is this right? I have double checked things.

Before anyone asks, yes I did forget to take an image of what it was like before I stripped it:bashhead:

Here is what it looks like now:

Many thanks!

Can I ask which shoes are you using?
Genuine BMW ones appear to be NLA everywhere I've looked.

The spring is correct. In that position it acts as a locking device for the adjuster.

These are ATE brand. This is the name on the original calipers, so I assume ATE may have been the brake OEM for BMW at that time . Got these off Autodoc - many brands to choose from.

Surprised these are NLA from BMW as I am sure they must have been used on other vehicles over the years

Mine looks exactly the same. Couldn't see any other way. Wonder if somebody comes up with a properer way to do it

What makes you think that isn’t the “proper” way to do it?

Perhaps its not the most elegant solution, but it is certainly an effective way of ensuring the adjuster does not move.

If you adjust the shoes without removing the disc/drum it's perfect for "feeling" each adjustment, and counting how far you have moved it.
