Welcome to the Forum from me here in South Wales UK, your in the right place to find out anything you ever need to know about your Z.
I would advise to get a decent Code Reader added to your toolbox, you will no doubt need one sooner or later and it saves paying garages to read the codes for you.
Creator 310+ works for me on my 1999 1.8 and my 2003 2.5 Z4, available on ebay and Amazon. For in depth diagnostics using a laptop BMW Scanner 1.4 is the easy one to use and BMW INPA and its suite of other software which can be a problem setting up on a laptop are worth having. Also remember that your car will be fitted with both a 16pin obd2 socket under the steering wheel and a round 'Pacman' socket in the engine bay. The 16pin socket will only read the engine module but the round Pacman socket will read all modules on the car. You will need a 16pin to 20pin round cable changer to plug your scanner in, available on ebay.
