Good good good vibrations... No... Bad

Hello everyone.
I wonder if anyone could help with a problem I'm trying to diagnose: vibrations in the drivetrain..I think.

In 2nd gear from about 3.5k to 4k there's a distinct vibration/grumbling from what feels like the back end but it mildly shakes the steering wheel too.
It then disappears.

The same thing happens in 3rd but at 2.5k to 3k ... And again disappears beyond that rpm. So not the same rpm though these figures do correspond to the same/v similar road speed.

Other gears seem generally fine though I think it's occasionally apparent.

Firstly, I have to admit this seems to only have appeared after putting on some new Bridgestone Potenza Sports 1000 miles ago, so my feeling is that there's something peculiar to the carcass of them that's causing this or maybe it's simply a straight up wheel balance issue which I'll get checked later this week (although one of the wheels has already been rebalanced after a repair on the (brand new) tread thanks to a feral nail)

It didn't show up straight away but after perhaps 6 to 700 miles.

I've swapped out the diff oil, the previous oil had only been in about 1000 miles but I thought it might have been something to check.

I guess aside from the obvious stated above, and given the vibration occurs at specific road speed it's most likely drive train related? Could a wheel imbalance only resonate at particular speed ... Wouldn't it just get worse and worse with rising speed?

Cheers, and sorry for the lengthy post

Forgot to say (though I think T-Tony's advice is likely the correct course to follow first), boot floor has been fixed already, with new diff hanger.

What car are we discussing here? Was this issue apparent before the new tyres were fitted? Yes, you can “drive through” wheel balance problems.

Z3m roadster, sorry.

The issue wasn't apparent, no.
Previously I had issues with vanos stumbling but I've overhauled that.

Between that time and the new tyres I only drove a couple of hundred miles but I seem to remember it being perfect ... In fact it was superb.

My money is on the tyres. If the supplier isn’t helpful contact Bridgestone direct. With it appearing after 600 to 700 miles it is possible that one of the wheels has lost a weight, you sometimes get that with stick on weights.

Just an update to help people who might be searching on this in 2026 or something...the flex disc on the propshaft is shot.
Looks like I've got a few hours under the car

Surely that would be pronounced under acceleration all the time? Hope you’ve found the culprit though.

Fair point.. But it definitely needs replacing as there isn't much left of it!
So I figure I'll start by ruling out the obvious and work from there.

Sorry for a tangential question but do you happen to know if there are any special tools needed for replacing the centre support bearing? "While I'm there" etc.
